Not to defend anybody involved here but the article does not say that the request has been fulfilled, only filed

[–] tonywu@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Couldn’t give a rat’s ass about GTA.

[–] generator@lemmy.zip 37 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

There's been more efforts to catch someone because of a game than millionaires evolved in pedofilia and human traffic

[–] stardreamer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 40 minutes ago

It's not a "game", it's a "product".

And they will do the same when food and water becomes a "product" too.

[–] itsjustachairmary@lemmy.world 5 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

The only thing we will not get before GTA 6 is the full and unredacted Epstein files.

[–] heartSagan5@lemmy.zip 1 points 27 minutes ago

[–] jjlinux@lemmy.zip 12 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Oh shit, I'm fucked!

No, wait, never mind, I use Linux 🤣

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

can microsoft still throw a GDID on a linux machine if you sign into a microsoft account while on linux? maybe not as powerful as on windows, but still as a unique identifying cookie or something?

[–] magic_smoke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

If they're not using burner accpunts on disposable/amnesiac Linux installs, its kind of on them.

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 54 points 16 hours ago (3 children)

I'll echo what most others say here: stop using discord and everything microsoft.

And maybe also reconsider if modern gaming is a worthwhile passtime.

Look, I love a good game as much as the next person. But with everything that is coming to light lately I can't shake the feeling that I want as little digital backdoors for their tentacles around. Because they are harvesting data all over the place.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 7 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

i want to stop using discord, but some important people to me refuse to leave it and its my good point of contact/talking with them, sadly.

[–] lordziv@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

This right here. I am in a LDR with my partner and we only use discord to talk. I have tried moving us to another platform but she doesn't understand the big deal.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

i wish my situation was that understandable, for me the other side is mostly just "I have nothing to hide, why should I care and upend everything because of it??" and the fact there is no real viable alternative that gives you even most of the stuff that discord does.

[–] WraithGear@lemmy.world 12 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

i went and set up my own hosted team speak server. tried to get my discord group of 12 people to switch over during the whole discord bullshit.

i did all the work and hosted it myself

guess how many switched over even just initially?

did you guess zero? because it was zero. “yea we are upset at discord, but if we are loud about not being happy they will change!” the real answer is ‘ i hope they change because i don’t want to be slightly inconvenienced’

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 2 points 7 hours ago

I hear you (figuratively speaking, because I don't use voice chat for gaming). My answer would be to quit.

Now I know that's a bit extreme for some. We all have our things that we're willing to give up or not. (Outside of gaming also).

I for example have a hard time getting people of whatsapp (pos meta spyware that it is). But keep at it, some changes take time. However, as extremer this world gets, the more people will open their eyes and take steps.

[–] Nalivai@lemmy.world 17 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

Modern tripple A games are shitty 9 times out of 10, and remaining good ones are way overpriced. But gaming is on all time rise, the amount of incredible games around, made by passionate and talented people are staggering. Indy is where it's at!

[–] JensSpahnpasta@feddit.org 66 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

That also gives you several other informations:

  • If Discord can read the device ID, every other website or program can?
  • If Discord can't and courts are forcing Microsoft to give out that data for Take2 to correlate IP adresses or other data, that is also really bad

So the only solution is to get the fuck away from everything Microsoft.

[–] Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

If Discord can read the device ID, every other website or program can?

mostly agree, but I think it might just be the Discord program that has access, not websites

[–] dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 hours ago

You are correct. Installed programs can see it, websites can’t.

Daily reminder that buying GTA 6, or any other Rockstar game for that matter, directly supports some of the worst oligarchy and authoritarianism present in the west.

Instead of buying any of their worthless slop - pirate, seed, don't even play it, share any and all leaks. Do your part to hurt their bottom line, and let us hope another Luigi takes up the case. Or ten.

[–] little_tuptup@lemmy.ml 24 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

sorry I'm genuinely out of the loop, but how is gta 6 supporting some of the worst oligarchy and authoritarianism?

[–] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 22 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

The CEO (Strauss Zelnick) has links to Epstein

[–] lordziv@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 hour ago

Every time I see his name it reminds me of a villain from Mr Robot lol

It's my understanding that this essentially amounts to the legal and collateral doxing of hundreds of thousands of people, if it spans all members of these servers.

Stop using Windows. Stop using Discord.

[–] toiletobserver@lemmy.world 54 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Where will i post the classified documents if not discord?

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 138 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] kieron115@startrek.website 30 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Unfortunately you're only allowed to do that if you're arguing that your (insert X vehicle here) should definitely have been able to take on (insert Y vehicle here) because of something in said classified documents.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 5 points 14 hours ago

Hey now not all of them leak documents. Some of them travel to warzones to acquire in person measurements.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 5 points 17 hours ago

You can join my Stoat I'll add a chat for you near the top of the list.

It's not encrypted at the moment, though, but if the other members stay dormant I'll consider it.

Stop using Windows. Stop using Discord.

Yep. On it almost a year now, ever since 10 was EOL'd and I learned Discord was building a profile on every user based on usage.

Linux has been awesome and Discord mostly sucked anyway.

[–] Hakuso@scribe.disroot.org 26 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

I dumped Discord when I heard they were trying to do an IPO, as soon as that happens a company is without fail going to screw all of their customers because if there are shareholders the customer becomes the product.

[–] dan@upvote.au 8 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (2 children)

This is going to happen with every large centralized service, especially if they let you use it for free. These services end up being expensive to run.

The only real solution is to use something decentralized. You're already on Lemmy so I assume you already know this. Matrix is decent (not perfect, but it's pretty good) and it's easily self-hostable using Tuwunel.

[–] poolcritter@pawb.social 1 points 2 hours ago

Tuwunel should not be recommended to new users.

Keep in mind the claim of being official is not true: this is a claim by one of the former co-maintainers of conduwuit, to claim legitimacy over other projects like continuwuity. Additionally, tuwunel's maintainer has openly made threats against the maintainers of continuwuity, aswell as being formally banned from the foundation for actively abusing protocol exploits. I'm not sure I'd trust a project primarily maintained by them for these reasons. Additionally, it's maintainer appears to currently also be pushing for publishing how to exploit the security vulnerabilities from the upcoming security release.

aur tuwunel-git, corroborated by nex (CoI: continuwuity maintainer; has received death thrrats from tuwunel developers) in #offtopic:continuwuity.org a few upgrades ago

They’re fishing with a dragnet subpoena for everyone on 3 discord servers whether or not they had anything to do with to the leak.

This is like demanding the lifetime customer history of everyone who had ever gone to a bar where a crime happened.

[–] uber_chicken@lemmy.world 5 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Stopped using discord a long time ago. If this doesn't make people stop, nothing will

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago

This isn't even remotely as bad as the ID thing, which was only delayed.

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 96 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Take-Two wants more than just names and is asking for MachineGuid and MSA device identifiers, registration and last-login IP addresses, phone numbers, linked Google and Xbox connections, and OneDrive contents for every account that communicated in three named Discord servers since June 1.

No government is requesting this and nothing can stop this massive transfer of personal information. This is a company mad at facing contempt for their anti-consumer practices and exercising extra-legal methods to find the justice they will buy against the people they deem responsible.

Take-Two is not stopping at who is responsible either. They are scrapping ALL records of everyone who has ever touched those Discord servers. And there is nothing innocent people can do to appeal or stop this.

Corporations are authoritarian motherfuckers.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I‘m more upset about the union busting than their anti-consumer practices but that‘s mostly because I have no interest in buying it. Either way it‘s an insane demand for a company to make. How about just let authorities handle it like everyone else would?

Did they check the marketing department?

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 15 points 21 hours ago

Yes but they have to make it look like it wasn't them.

[–] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 89 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Basically, Microsoft spies on everyone. They'll identify you and let the feds trawl through your OneDrive account. On Windows, it actually takes a very conscious effort to NOT upload files to OneDrive.

They're targeting a guy just because he unknowingly interacted with the suspect. As a joke.

If anyone questions why people like me have a GrapheneOS pixel connecting to self-hosted cloud storage on a home linux server, this is why.

[–] ChogChog@lemmy.world 42 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh sick! So if this goes through, precedent is set that anyone who can come up with a reason greater than “my video game leaked”, can legally ~~broker~~ ~~collect~~ ~~harvest~~ request data from select discord servers that can directly tie the real identity of an individual to their windows device id.

I can’t see that being abused at all.

Big for Matrix and XMPP and maybe Delta, sure why not.

j/k, they'll never leave discord

[–] Screen_Shatter@lemmy.world 53 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The hypocrisy is strong from this company making a game that glorifies theft.

Fucking peoples lives over for leaking what is essentially advertising is an insane timeline to be living in. In a proper world, Take-two would get laughed out of court and Microsoft /Discord would be under investigation for spying on its users.

[–] OR3X@lemmy.world 44 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Wasn't there a thread the other week warning everyone about Microsoft device fingerprinting and there were chuds in the comments saying it was a nothing-burger and the fingerprinting was necessary for licensing or some shit? Talk about timing!
