The writing has been on the wall since the orange idiot was elected. Carney has been loudly telling everyone that Canada needs to diversify its trading partners If your primary customer is still the USA then you shouldn't be surprised at your business failing.

It's not their fault, it's Trump's fault.
And before that Biden, then Trump, then Obama, then Bush, etc...
It's silly to blame one person for the existence of the US.
And by extension, Trump voters’ fault. I’m an American. And I didn’t vote for the orange fugly meatball. But I am sorry the world has to endure his immaturity and idiocy.
An 80 year old imbecile as president of a major country and commander of the largest and most well-armed military — this is how stupid and racist/misogynist his voters are. They would rather have the world burn, including themselves, than let an intelligent black woman become president.
One day he will be dead and MAGA will be a small whimper of what it was and we can all piss on their ashes. Until then, I raise a glass to my neighbors with the hope that we shall overcome, together.
No one wants to see americans apologise for other americans it's properly pathetic. You are just americans.
Yeah that’s not how critical thinking works. But you keep trying to lump us all together and call any attempt at empathy and understanding and sorrow as pathetic.
Good bye.
Lump americans in together with.... americans yes very critical much thought
One of the things that bugs me at this point, is it's been like two years coming, and these business are still largely reliant on the USA market. Like if you're a business owner, and your one major trading region is a dumpster fire, and you just let it burn for two years, what the fuck?
It's sorta like people who rebuild homes in areas prone to natural disasters like floods / hurricanes etc. You can see the history, you have no reason to think that the trend is going to reverse, you know all your shits gonna get wrecked, but you just keep pretending like it's all fine.
Yeah, i dont understand this situation....
2 years to prepare, and now they dont even mention TRYING to pivot or find other business. They just throw up their hands and say "we bankrupt"
there's always articles about fake chinese honey in the canadian market.... so clearly there is a market share available domestically for canadian honey take
Digging into it, they started building a direct to consumer when this all started, but they have always been a commercial operation, selling to companies that repackage so they had little ability to pivot quickly.
My first thought was a "leopards ate my face" situation, but reality does point to a legit casualty.
Sell honey in other provinces. I only buy Canadian real honey.
Even if thats not enough honey is a long storage product of relatively high value. Im sure it can be sold pretty much world wide. I mean we get fruits from south america in the winter
And we pay next to nothing for them.
honey is a long storage product
Warehouse space isn't free.
Nor transport.
@non_burglar@lemmy.world and @kent_eh@lemmy.ca yes just like when selling globally like to the us or with other global trade items. transit and storage does not disapear because its close. luckily shipping is some of the cheapest transit and because of lead time you send it out earlier from storage.
US is 90% of their business. Hope you're ready to eat honey for every meal.
Anywhere sugar is used honey can be used. Ill buy enough just to make mead actually.
Planning to make rhubarb mead next year when the rhubarb I planted is ready to harvest.
That sounds lovely
It's better for you than sugar, at least.
My body is ready. Do they distribute nationwide? If not, grow at home.
Diversify. It’s hard, but certainly doable.
As a mead enjoyer, don't suppose you can send it to the UK?
Could do with more honey supply to drive down prices... Its so expensive.
Well, if Carney puts the same tariffs on US honey, that will be a pretty obvious switchover for a California-sized portion of honey.
Then find other global partners who would also like Canadian honey.
Also, Canada refines sugar, but the beets have traditionally been grown in the southern US.
So switch to refining honey instead of sugar beets? That would use up the entire supply rather quickly, even if it didn’t make quite as much profit.
Honey is like 10x the price of sugar though
Not anymore….
If the price of honey dropped that much wouldn't you just export it?
I'll take some cheaper than sugar honey...
Honeys funny. I worked in an honey factory/ apiary for a few months in grad school (pick blue berries in the morning, lift supers in the hot house late morning/ afternoon). Most honey operations are high distributed. You gotta move your bees to where the flowers are. So operators will drive the hives hundreds, thousands of miles in a season.
Just putting highlighter on how stupid this whole thing is. Like Brexit but dumber. Steve Bannon can suck my farts.
Sucker punched by a convicted felon.
People have forgot why you don't make Canadians mad. Maybe its time to add some more entries into our list. Just saying.
Good, any business that accepts US capital should fail.
