This is why we need public transportation

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 6 points 1 day ago

Google.... What if we detected a person was drunk and then alerted the authorities! And then push notifications for Uber in case the drunk wants to pay us a cut for detecting them drunk and giving him a ride... Or an attorney in case they accidentally drive home or do other things while drunk. Or for telehealth therapy! Or for more drinks! Or maybe they wanna chase it with a good burger nearby! Hey! This drink worked! Do you want to buy the bottle online from Amazon? What other activities are others having while drunk! How about a hotel room nearby and or a person to wakeup with tomorrow? Maybe you might want to marry tonight and divorce tomorrow morning?

The possibilities are endless!

[–] Mangoholic@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 day ago

They will just charge drunk fee. Uber not the driver.

[–] janewaydidnothingwrong@lemmy.world 75 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Dude I am so sick of all these weird half assed randomly censored posts. You can say drunk on the internet. You can say onlyfans on the internet. You can say fuck these goddamn piece of shit cuntsicles on the internet. Jesus fucking christ.

I think when they do it with words like this is for engagement.

What? Uber had algorithms to determine whether the person is drunk or not and surge the price for them back when I was working for them in 2019

[–] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

TBF the OP is not dated. Nevertheless, how does it work? Once they surge the price, one drunk guy will probably just accept it, mindlessly, while a more sober foe will probably tap FUCK NO, and try again. Maybe that's the algorithm, the good old capitalist pig algorithm.

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 0 points 12 hours ago

In the region I am talking about all major taxi apps are doing this. Except one but it has a basically nonexistent reputation.

[–] zanyllama52@infosec.pub 8 points 1 day ago

I see self censorship, I downvote it

Recovering Uber driver here.

I drove back in 2017-2018, and at that time Uber was starting to get difficult about reimbursing cleaning fees when some drunk puked in the car, which made fewer drivers want to pick up drunks. I can't imagine the situation has improved since then.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

So wait.

You get charged a cleaning fee if you puke in someones car.. but uber wont give the cleaning fee to the driver, you know..the person who has to have their car cleaned?

[–] StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I unfortunately drove Uber for a bit back in the late 2010s until I got tired of being sexually harassed. Drivers do get paid the cleaning fee, but the rideshare services were becoming increasingly stringent about their requirements for paying it. The issue was threefold.

People would soil vehicles then dispute the cleaning charges with their credit card, so Uber would be out whatever was paid to the driver. Last I knew, this was a maximum of $225, but capped at $80 if the driver did the cleaning. Good luck finding a professional cleaner that charges less than $225 for cleaning seats smeared with vomit or feces.

Next, drivers would fake vomit or feces and file a report, causing their prior passengers to be charged a cleaning fee.

Ultimately, the ride share services tightened up their methods for both charging and refunding these fees to the detriment of both drivers and riders because they're soulless, capitalist pig fuckers that only care about profit.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

That's right! Isn't that fun?

This and the fact that I started to make almost no money is why I don't drive for Uber anymore.

Know what doesn't refuse to pick you up if you're pished? The Night Bus.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT WINS AGAIN! INVEST IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION!

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 84 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

But public transport won't make a handful of people rich, so that's a non starter for many.

And you might have to reckon with living in a society, with other kinds of people. You'd really ask someone to ride a bus with a {slur of your choice} just sitting there, like they're entitled to peace and dignity?

In other words, conservatives are fuck heads who make the world worse for stupid reasons.

Edit: fix autocorrect mistake

Far more likely scenario

Uber can now tell when you're drunk, and don't have a car and will charge you more because you're desperate.

[–] fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 21 points 2 days ago

And not pay the driver any extra

Whew, I sure am glad that somebody haphazardly crossed out that 'u'. I might have had to read the word "drunk" otherwise.

[–] craftrabbit@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

I don't understand. Why would anybody censor drunk? Like I see the train of thought for the fucks and shits etc. but drunk? DRUNK?? IS THIS WHAT OUR SOCIETY HAS BECOME? WE TALK ABOUT ethanol excess oopsies WHILE SOMEONE VEHICULARLY MANSLAUGHTERS THE NEXT GENERATION???

[–] hirihit640@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 days ago (4 children)

by this point most people in america probably don't remember taxi cabs. they would often be dirty and driven by a disheveled wildman. these drivers answered to no one other than their dispatcher who gave just as little of a fuck.

do you have a problem with the driver? did he smell bad, did he talk too much, did he blast a master P song at full volume for the entire ride despite your objections?

tough shit.

uber was built in response to this. it was not only based on these occasional bad experiences, but to ensure that every working class person was on their best behavior when in the presence of their betters. it was never about a service or bettering anything, other than sparing the better-off from mild inconvenience.

Is there an actual source for this? I tried searching news for “Uber will know you’re drunk” and found nothing, I reverse look-upped the meme and saw it nowhere, there is no indication of a source in the meme.

I want to know how they will know that you’re drunk, and I want to know why they want to cut off what I assume is a decent chunk of their clientele, but I’m not seeing anything.

The point of Uber is to make money. As long as businesses can make money by kicking you in the face, they will do it.

[–] turtlesareneat@piefed.ca 19 points 2 days ago

My husband and I used Uber for one of the first times to get back home after a long walk, where we were both inebriated. It was pretty clear and we weren't trying to hide it, but we weren't rude, and I was careful not to slam the door or anything. The driver gave us a 1-star rating and it took a long time before I found a few drivers willing to chance it on me in the meantime. I don't remember that driver but I hope I've cut them off in traffic since. You know what, I probably have.

[–] gigastasio@sh.itjust.works 48 points 3 days ago (23 children)

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say this comes from Uber drivers getting tired of being assaulted and having their vehicles trashed by drunk people.

It’s not all of them, but it’s likely enough of them to ruin it for everyone.

Thats a lie if they know you are drunk they will hit you with surge pricing. They are doing something similar with phone battery, if the battery is low they hit you with surge pricing!

"Dating app could soon tell if you're horny and refuse service." Let them shoot themselves in the foot if they want, I guess?

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

Tumblr and OF both attempted to ban NSFW to appease advertisers.

OF pulled the plug immediately but Tumblr never recovered

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (5 children)

Drivers are currently making like $12-$14/hr, so...yup. Delivery drivers are the number one recipients of government food benefits in the U.S. right now. And Uber will just deny my cleaning fee when someone vomits, soooo...yup. Not accepting that shit in my car and paying out of pocket to clean it after midnight (tons of detailing options open then), having to drag an unconscious stranger out of my car, etc.
