[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 128 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I'm sure it will be much much stupider.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 51 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I don't know how it could get stupider than that, but I know you're right

[–] Johnnyvibrant@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 6 days ago

the AI bubble has popped

So, there's one positive thing, at least.

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 29 points 6 days ago (3 children)

New bubble is gambling on bumfights.

[–] TootSweet@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

That's Kalshi's slogan, right?

No wait, that's "gambling on fixed bumfights". My bad.

"The remnants of our armies have finally caught Mr. Bezos and Elon, and they are here tonight to fight for their lives!...get ready to throw your shivs into the arena, elders and children! Our people died for this wonderful day to happen!"

...That is the GOOD ending to 2028. 🤨

You left out there part where everyone has been enslaved by Musk, Bezos, and Zuckerberg to collect and deliver water to each of their strategic reserves. All "payment" for labor is made via rations of raw water.

[–] DeLancre@piefed.social 23 points 6 days ago (3 children)

where everyone

Everyone in america*

Oi, fixed it for ya mate

[–] My_IFAKs___gone@lemmy.world 23 points 6 days ago

I hope you're right. I would love for their power to enslave to be geographically confined.

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 17 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It's 2027, and the world has been renamed America.

[–] Souvenir@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 6 days ago

But only in America. Outside America, we continue to pretend that we're somehow different, a comforting lie we tell ourselves. Like children who think a night light will keep away the monsters. But outside through shadow of the setting sun, they steal past the windows of the blissfully dead, looking for the victim shivering in bed. Creeping closer now, closer to the foot of the bed.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Lol. Lmao even. These idiots aren't going to stay in the US. The line has to go up, that means they need more bodies.

[–] DeLancre@piefed.social 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Well, I haven't said that their shitty policies doesn't affect other countries. In fact, they are very much do, since global economy heavily relies on dollar. But if they try to go literally enslaving other countries? That would be a death sentence.

I keep thinking that the next Katrina or Andrew or Helene scale hurricane is going to just make whatever part of the US it hits uninhabitable. Its going to be bad enough that nobody rebuilds in that area, and we have our first refugees.

Something slightly off-topic that happened at work last week, an air conditoning unit stopped working. It was easily fixed but it broke down exactly like what was mentioned in Neal Stephenson's book "Termination Shock". Ants crawled into the contactor and kept it from closing all the way. We could really end up with Relay Refugees.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (2 children)

There is currently a tropical storm out in the Atlantic Ocean that has been named Dolly how ironic would it be if it makes landfall in Florida and totally wipes it out.

[–] Souvenir@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

It'd be kinda funny if Dolly made the US go tits up.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

They'll call it Dolly's Revenge

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 days ago (4 children)

I keep thinking that the next Katrina or Andrew or Helene scale hurricane is going to just make whatever part of the US it hits uninhabitable. Its going to be bad enough that nobody rebuilds in that area, and we have our first refugees.

It doesn't even have to be THAT bad. People living in floodplanes are largely uninsurable in more and more of the US, and because it's the US, there is no state-level fallback like more sensible places have. There is no real emergency aid anymore, since the conservatives have basically destroyed FEMA. There are no protective works anymore, because conservatives are stripping flood mitigation and resilient communities are now Woke and thus bad.

The US has never been less ready to deal with another big disaster, and the likelyhood of one is only increasing.

Its going to be bad enough that nobody rebuilds in that area, and we have our first refugees.

Literally what happened back during the original Katrina. A bunch of people from Louisiana picked up and moved to Houston permanently. Houston’s 2 million population grew by about 10 percent virtually overnight, straining all key city services such as schools, hospitals, emergency services and, particularly, public safety. This made a number of Houston Republicans extremely upset (Barbara Bush chief among them)

It has happened before. It will happen again.

I've always suspected the US is uniquely susceptible to the worse effects of climate change and a changing world.

Population too spread out to make public transport or cycling viable in the event of fuel shortages or distribution problems. Electricity also has to travel longer distances. Too reliant on AC, rather than passive insulation. A problem when fuel shortages and heat are combined.

And you're taking too long to go full in on renewables. For example, even ignoring the environmental benefits, solar panels are great at reducing power consumption when its hot/sunny. Hell, on a sunny day it's possible for a house to be giving back to the power grid, even with the AC on full.

Europe's also fucked, but at least the houses are well insulated, and solar adoption and AC use is skyrocketing. So when cities as far north as Paris hit 50C(122F) by 2050, as is possible assuming an unfortunately plausible 3.5C global warming, the number of deaths won't be catastrophic.

Of course, once agriculture's hit, shit's going to hit the fan globally. We'll get a taste of this in the coming year. Farmers have been suffering badly from climate change, high fuel prices, and high fertiliser prices also due to Hormuz.

rendered as sleek and sexy anime characters rather than as 200+ pound mounds of suburban flesh barreling down on you in a 100k pickup truck.

[–] spicytuna62@lemmy.world 17 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Oh, and don't forget. It didn't snow anywhere this year, and the coastal cities are beginning to flood. Not that it's something you have to worry about since you live inland, but it would sure be nice if it wasn't 127°F outside or if it'd just rain a little for the first time since maybe February.

[–] mybuttnolie@sopuli.xyz 3 points 5 days ago

but remember that climate change is fake news

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 14 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

And Donald Trump's approval rating will hit a brutal new low of just 75%.

Waiting for the big beautiful obituary

[–] Pudutr0n@lemmy.world 14 points 6 days ago

[–] Bieren@lemmy.today 3 points 5 days ago

There’s still time left in 2026

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 3 points 6 days ago

In 2027, a roll of toilet paper is worth 100 cheeseburgers. Be sure to use your lucre to buy a bidet.

...actually, I should stockpile some TP. Canada ain't gonna supply us anymore. Off to CostCo I go...

[–] 2pNza@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Why don’t people file a vote of no confidence against Trump and call early elections?

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 days ago

Because Americans are really that stupid and terrible. This is his second term.

[–] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

theres no mechanism for this in the US. basically, we're stuck with him until he either dies or completes his term.
