I'm glad there were enough thoughtful people to vote for sanity and not let maple maga win last time, saw the shitshow in usa and chose wisely. One system tries to help the majority, based on data and what works irl in other places to help the most people per cost, all boats rise and such, and the other system rules by what the leader says, don't question what they say, don't fact check, obey or punishment. Obviously Canada goes with the healthy system most of the time and passed healthcare, LGBTQ+ rights and ended cannabis prohibition for the whole country, while usa is held back by the unhealthy systems regularly and the damage shows.

Canadian conservatives vote conservative because they're conservatives and they're voting. It has nothing to do with ideology and everything to do with conditioning. Much like republicans.
That's true. The US Republicans seem to be riddled with people that are anti the republic in both its founding and general concepts of what a republic is.
It used to be called the Reform party.
It's just a dead brand killed off by Mulroney in the 80s.
The current party is just a mix of Western Right -wing MAGA types that were the Reform, Alliance parties out of Alberta.

Example: Jamil Jirvani. Appointed senior fellow for Diversity and Empowerment at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, a conservative, libertarian think tank affiliated with the US Atlas Network, in 2020. Buddy of JD Vance, they ran a fake charity in Ohio together.
After that he got fired from Bell Media for covid misinformation and insisting on misgendering Demi Lovato. Then he pulled the race card claiming he was fires because he was black.
Since January 2026, he has been in Washington involved in the trade negotiations, which is why that ended up being the shitshow it is.
Bowmanville -Oshawa loves him, now they can eat a big steaming bowl of tariffs.

I'm sure that's part of it but think it's more that they just have to be contrary. They have no policy position on anything except to disagree with whatever Carney is doing. If he capitulated and signed a crappy trade deal they'd be saying he's weak and should have stood his ground.
Some of them, for sure! I learned from covid that about 10% of the population is contrarian, and though that overlaps somewhat with conservatism, it's also prevalent among self-described "antiauthoritarians" who are into alternative health and politics (they think). This pans out with the similar percentage of antimaskers in 1917 and during the smallpox inoculations.
They're only ever on their own side.
