Damn man, living in Seattle I am jealous of what NYC got. Our mayor is still figuring out how to communicate to the public.
Mamdani has a lot of charisma and hired really good pr people. She needs to figure that shit out. He also rises above the situations so he can clear the way for an agenda. She seems to be reacting to everything.
It’s a hard job man and you shouldn’t expect the mayor to be able to communicate with their constituents on day one. Just give them 3 or 4 election cycles. Maybe soon.
Did she not just get the kids free lunch and breakfast? Sure shes a policy wonk but, I feel like she's doing better than 98% of all mayors.
That plan was approved by the City Council well before her time. This time around it just coincidentally lined up with a surplus in affordable housing funding surplus (weird how the city still has a huge affordable housing issue). Free lunches have been around for a while they've just finally been funded for all SPS... For now... Until the funding is gone again.
😞 I didn't know the situation was that precarious. Hopefully the affordable housing initiatives succeed.

Y'know, this is a really big fuckin' deal right now. Not this specifically, but the DSA-type principles, or progressive, or whatever you want to call it - getting a huge win in NYC and showing the rest of the nation some of the things that can be accomplished.
I know MAGA won't see this and even if they do it won't change their minds, but this is the kind of thing that will change SOME minds.
These are the types of things that can be done if we elect actual progressives. But we need a supermajority with both houses of congress, as well as the president, and at this point, with stacking SCOTUS.
If we could somehow manage that, we could fix this country.
I sure hope that progressivism succeeds. If it doesn't, America will either descend into being Nazi America or suffer a 2nd American Civil War.
I would prefer a better society emerging without bloodshed. War is a painful thing, full of hardship for just about everyone. I want to spend my time reading manga, and voting for Mamdani's 2nd term as President.
Very much agree. We're on the verge of fascism, and I don't know if we can save this or not, but I sure hope so.

Jokes aside, this seems legitimately really awesome, hopefully we can start seeing similar initiatives around the country. Local government needs to step in where our federal and state governments are failing(which seems to be just about everywhere these days)

Isn't it interesting there's not a peep mentioning that Biden was promoting unions across the country, now this is only happening in one city in the country? I'm sure Julie Su is doing good work as "Deputy Mayor of New York City for Economic Justice" but I think she was making a bigger difference when she was... what was her previous job again? Oh right, United States Secretary of Labor.
It's cool to have a municipal government doing this, but wasn't it nicer to have the Federal government doing this?

I was just calling out the defeatist children on here who like to write despair polemics for each other mocking grassroots activism, collective organizing, and any notion of reform as “liberal” naïveté, elevating instead accelerationism and “what’s really necessary.” Play dumb and they’ll proudly reveal that they mean lone-wolf vigilantism or full-on stochastic terrorism. They gravitate to negative news stories though, and rarely comment on stories like this except to explain how the progress isn’t real or how the fascists will undo it, then complain that no one will do anything about it.
But you’re right. While I am a leftist, never was a big fan of Biden, and think he made some serious blunders with consequences we’re living through now, I despise the current trend of sacrificing truth on the altar of narrative amplification. For example, a criticism I often heard repeated was that the Biden administration was sleeping on judicial appointments (like, decrying his inaction next to Trump’s aggressive judicial capture). It seemed like an easy thing to check, so I did, and it turned out the opposite was true. By the numbers, his administration was uniquely proactive and had obviously made it a priority. But because the hearsay “felt more right” to so many of us, the corrections were often buried, and I still see this “fact” shared in leftist circles to this day. This is not the way.
