For completeness, there should probably be an "I know a guy" in the A tier, though admittedly that isn't really available until you've been working for at least a few years.

Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
You're right - perfectly valid. Along with "A guy I went to college with works there now." And then "My Dad knows a guy there" around the A bucket.
A guy I went to college with works there now."
This ones most likely
Luck. Luck helps as well. I've become the guy knowing people, but hard work alone wouldn't have brought me there.
That just brings us back to tier F.
Idk sometimes you just have social networks and someone in them is looking for someone with your skills
I knew a guy
Where's walking into the store, demanding to speak to the owner, looking him straight in the eye and giving him a firm handshake while insisting you'll be the best employee he's ever hired?
Just kidding, they'll just look at you weird and tell you to check the F tier platforms.
I would love to see one of those sankey diagrams about job applications except it’s some dude walking into local businesses everyday to do the firm handshake and insist that he would be the greatest employee they will ever have.
And then, because I am a scientist, repeat the experiment with the same dude but dressed like a slob, with a woman, same lady except dressed like a slob, etc
And then do a small paper on the sociology of the interactions and how hiring managers innate biases might impact getting hired.
My old professor called and asked me if I was looking for a job because one of the company he was freelancing for wanted him to come over full time. He told me to apply and he'd vouch for me. I got the job.
Very wholesome. Not many such exist.
I've known a few coworkers throughout the years who have reached out after they left where we worked "hey man it's better over here." put in a good word for me and boom.
not sure if that is A or B though. all corporate jobs.
My first job was "my dad knows a guy" (that guy really fought for me at that company and that turned out great for everyone) and from then on almost every job was through a former coworker. Have returned the favour a few times.
I don't consider myself a good networker by any means. But that's literally how I've gotten everyone of my jobs during my professional career.
Went to a job fair senior year of college, saw an old classmate, struck up a conversation and that lead to my first job.
Then from there on out, exactly what you described. Just old coworkers recommending better places.
Honestly, the idea of applying for a job going in cold over the Internet sounds like a horrible experience.
You may not consider yourself a good networker, but I think you must be. I've been working for over 20 years now and never got a single job because of a referral.
Honestly, the idea of applying for a job going in cold over the Internet sounds like a horrible experience.
It does sound that way, but in my very limited experience it worked out rather well.
Current gig is the only one in my professional career where I didn't get a foot in the door by word of mouth, and aside from it being scary, it wasn't really that different. Got me a low 6 figure 100% remote work gig a few years back and I love it. But again, this is a sample size of 1.
It's not too bad when you've got a license that's in demand but without a license # to put in the box on the app it's pretty rough. Was pretty rough for the unlicensed roles in my field but is decently easy with. This is reminding me to call back that recruiter in the morning that hubs convinced me to stay in-state because they gave me a follow-up call like a month later to ask if I'm still considering them and idw be too rude in case I do decide to move the year after next.
Good to know you're actively screwed if your parents disowned you.
Just find some old guy to be friends with. Chances are he knows a guy who needs a guy
For what its worth, i havent talked to my parents in a decade and have moved around but have still landed jobs, its just stressful and time consuming bc most of the job postings are fake
especially if they dont understand the job market(especially if they are boomer or gen-xers, and the family is railing on the child for not finding a job in recent years.
I mean, yes, pretty much, having shitty parents fucking sucks
Idk i figured that one out fairly quickly after it happened
(It actually did get better, I just didn't get any nepotism)
A is “I’m good friends with the guy” B is “My good friend knows a guy”
ye its called nepotism
its nepotism and croniyism, if you had the chance of visiting the indeed forums before it was shutdown. monsters and ziprecruiter is probably the worst ones to use, compared to indeed and glassdoor, because thier listings tends to cater to people who had significant experience from the get-go.
Or, you know, good old fashioned networking. Unless that’s what you mean by cronyism.
As someone that's rode on nepotism jobs my entire adult life, I agree lol. It sure does make the interviewing process easier.
Or being SSS and becoming self employed.

A tier may have to be “I used to work with the guy”
what about #getfedihired?
also moms can also know guys!
"Get fed, I hired?"
get fedi hired
a hashtag on the non threadyverse fedi for job ads or non-ad posts about free positions (e.g. in the company the poster working for)
Aw. I wanted to get fed. Or feed people.
aww poor noodle, you can still get fed
(i didn't think about feeding when reading "fed" lol)
Yall have dads?
I actually got what I would consider A tier for my first job. I walked into the local pizzeria, they handed me a job form, I completed it and gave it back, then the owner of the pizzeria did my interview right then and there, and I started working the next day.
That guy gave me a glimpse of what the "good ole days" must've felt like.
G- Guys can I just get the job. This is dumb.
Shameless Self-promotion
Not quite S-tier, and definitely better than F-tier, cut out the middleman and search/download job posting data directly with my pipeline: Trace Jobs. Trace ingests ~50k new unique job postings per day and are queryable via REST api at https://kaleh.net/trace. There are currently exactly 2,366,671 job postings on the disk.
Hey, I was really interested in checking this out, until I realized that I needed to enter payment even for your free plan. Why is that required?
Yeah, great question. This was something I deliberated about a lot. In the end, the decision to require a $0 payment to access the free plan came down to two things: 1) mitigating exposure to Sybil attacks and 2) minimizing operational burden on me. I think it could be revisited in the future and with my current budget, this is what I came up with.
Regardless, thank you for taking a look and providing feedback. I really appreciate the comment and it'll help me navigate the path forward for that project.
Thanks for answering! Best of luck.
Does anyone's dad know of anyone hiring
Does an uncle count as dad knows a guy?
You can take out Glassdoor and SimplyHired because they're both owned by Indeed.
glassdoor used to be better because of the reviews, until they got astroturfed, it seems thats why indeed eliminated thier forums at the same time. which is around '21.
Even those don’t even work anymore
I think LinkedIn should go to Z---.
"The guy is scared of my dad"
