Congratulations! It's like getting a scholarship. Only took six years before you are now eligible to hold a paying position, except there aren't any, any we have to make room for new paying recruits, so you're no longer required. Now you can take your valuable experience to some other company, but they won't hire you because they've got their own pipeline to choose from.

The uni I went to charged a tuition fee for placement year. They did however enforce that placement was only approved placement if it was paid. There was an exception for starting your own company or working for some startups but this was a case by case basis and not many people took this up.

The only error in this is that it’s already happening. This year’s graduates are struggling like never before to secure short term internships necessary for their education. In my uni, we used to have a long list of potential internship placements, but they all said “AI can do better than an intern”… only other universities are accepting students as an informal exchange program
