Unionize when the going is good; don’t wait until the company is struggling, and the job market is strained.

Just look at tech. They’ve got the latter, not the former, but there’s a lot of people wishing they had a collective bargaining agreement guaranteeing a payout if they’re laid off because management fucked up.
