Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

WARNING!!! this post is FAKE!!!! i fabricated it.

yeah yeah i will make an actual post which isn't just silly cheap stuff like this. i could have made this into a fancier thing but i don't think it would have helped much. sadly, tweetgen was down so i had to use a really bad other one which uses the old twitter style and doesn't support pfps. ugh. whatever whatever. at least it's not a repost, amiright? hahaaaa-----

this one may come across a bit more theatrical than usual. i didn't want it to, but that's how the text turned out. hmm..

alt image (catbox, high quality)

yea i will make an actual post today, you will get that, don't worry. i have the idea already but got stuffs to to outside of posts rn... at least a bit.

i wish you a wonderful day in which someone listens to your concerns <3

EDIT: added the warning

thats the version I specifically wanted to point away from.

the goal for users obviously isnt misinformation, so presenting them with something else that can also misinform feels like we are making fun of the user, even tho the joke is meant to be more sweet-leaning.

to me it reads like this bad mixture of insulting the target with a sweet afterburn which doesn't sit right with me.

[–] Hi_ImAmber@piefed.ca 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I guess for me there are plenty of people out there that take what an LLM tells them at face value and run with it, regardless of the warnings, both from the LLM itself, "Gemini is an AI and can make mistakes", the wider community at large. We see it happening in USian politics (a recent article I scrolled pasted mentioned something out AI telling the USian defense group that a target was a target when it turned out to be a school).

So, jokes aside, even though the goal isn't misinformation, it's what the output could potentially be, so if the output has to be checked anyway, why not do the work upfront, rather than waste resources, time, and environmental damage only to arrive at the same place as having just done the thing yourself anyway?

Also, 196 so I had to post something in your comments before I left.

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

to me at least, the benefit of LMs is the ability to process lots of data, and then use its output as pointers to the actual source. such pointers like "the site mentions your problem in section 3.5" are much more likely to be correct than false.

it is unfortunate how many peeps do treat the output as correct by default. but to me, that says more about peoples expectations and behaviours toward the software rather than the software itself. Which.... yea, is a problem.

I think it is fair to say that LLMs do actually have purposes they can serve, and functions they can do, so I'm sorry if my response seems to be outright dismissal. I didn't mean it like that.

I'm just kinda burned out in my every day life of "I asked chatgpt, I asked Gemini"... Etc. that my snark levels are off the charts.

❤️

It's absurd that people ask it about anything and everything. I suck at coding and sometimes I suck at muddling through error message logs and it's been immensely helpful for those things but that's about it. I wouldn't ever think to use them for anything else and it's not worth burning down the planet for just that.

Fair, and that would be useful IF it didn't waste obscenely huge amounts of power and water while doing so.

We used to have a pretty decent information indexing system that people seem to have forgotten, it was called Google and it used to be pretty awesome at that task, before it became evil and greedy and started caring more about ad revenue than actual search results.

Can I get please some recommendation for a non-romantic manga? Maybe a female MC being bad ass?

[–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

so how do you break a cycle of deskrotting huh? It's kinda like bedrotting but I'm just sitting here watching movies or YT n not doing anything else. got anything for that?

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Do you know that thing where you stare at some particular spot, and you keep staring for minutes at a time and your head feels all clear after that?

Try making yourself some tea / coffee, and sit down near a window where you can see some nature. Perhaps with leaves rustling or just trees to look at.

Just sitting there, maybe with a warm blankie over yourself, holding the warm tea and looking outside can be really soothing. If that's not enough stimulation, talking to yourself is an awesome way to get your thoughts into a concrete shape, which is an awesome way to think through things on your mind. For me, coming from this relaxed but not consuming state makes me feel fresh and able to pick up stuff I wanna do.

if you feel the need to do something with digital media, I hiiiiughly recommend to just try stuff out.

  • download audacity and try remake songs with your mouth by layering multiple recordings
  • pull Krita and try all the brushes it comes with and maybe post your result on 196 cuz why not
  • look online for images and pull them together into some kind of collage

that way you really are doing something that has output and you can reference later and also its more of an active / creative process which is a wonderful mood to start other things from.

I hope this helps <3

Thank you for your amazing comment. I’ll try that looking outside thingy.
The thing is I just feel.. I don’t know how to describe it, like I can’t focus. Like how when you look at something close to your face but relax your eyes to see “thru” the thing, but for focus.
I actually managed to come up with a solid game idea, but putting it into action just feels weirdly hard.

Get a non-screen hobby? Paint miniatures, go hiking, volunteer at a shelter... I say as I deskrot watching video essays until midnight most nights.

[–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 3 points 1 month ago

Ya I like to paint but that requires me to get up off my lazy ass. I also not very good at it so the motivation ain't there.

[–] Sibbo@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 month ago (4 children)

yes even the things banned on that website

So how do I make a biological weapon?

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 month ago

hmmmm okay fine I actually dont know that, but I'll listen to your rambles ~

[–] riwo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

piss in a water balloon and throw it at ppl >:3

[–] Sibbo@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Pee is sterile, as far as I know.

But yeah, it's both biological and a weapon.

[–] riwo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

urine is not sterile urune is not sterile

https://health.clevelandclinic.org/is-urine-sterile (no it's not)

you would be such an easy target for my bio weapons

[–] lfox02@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago

I'm not sure where the hell I heard that certain body fluids are sterile (probably from ammonia or something?), but that makes such little sense. It's literally your wastewater.

[–] gandalf_der_13te@feddit.org 0 points 1 month ago

urine is sterile compared to shit, but not clinically sterile

Sneeze into a jar

[–] rain_enjoyer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 month ago

there's a couple of diseases that are highly dangerous to people that are just circulating in the wild in some random remote area. every year officials in china and mongolia release a statement about not eating marmots because they carry plague and from time to time someone doesn't listen and dies because of that

either that, or you'd be targeted by someone's drone if anyone figures out what's going on

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Gah this is too damned soft and cute I’m gonna implode 😭 this feels like reading a warm hug and a bite of a fresh cinnamon roll when I was expecting snark and it’s the most pleasant sensation of confusion I’ve maybe ever had lolol

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago

awwww yea these are the kinda reactions I'm hoping for <3

also yea, posts starting with the "I asked chatgpt-" really tend to lean into snarky uncomfy things, sometimes straight up insults, and that's no fun. leading with kindness feels like a better appraich I feel-

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sadly LLMs are pretty good at some seriously difficult things. That being said character.ai and dating nonsense is just that.

But I cannot order a implementation of a Runge-Kutta-4 in Rust using (framework) from you and expect a decent implementation. Even if I told you to weite highly Performance code you would likely fail or take longer than the AI

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

listen, I know. I'm aware of ML progress, likely more than... most peeps on 196. and I agree, I used deepseek to deploy my game server on my raspi in a way that makes it easy for me to manage and add stuff, its good. models helped me multiple times out of a "GNOME is dead after an update, plz make it work again" scenario from the tty via opencode, and I know that these are the low end of the spectrum in terms of capability.

The post was meant to be more about the most common usecase of LMs: companionship.

EDIT: also I have web_search tools aswell so like--- yeah...

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, I think we just agree with each other :3 and I am frustrated by reactionaries.

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago

Yeah. yeah.... it gets exhausting fast, one kinda has to keep down here on Lemmy about this stuff >v<

[–] KernelTale@programming.dev 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I am working on a C++ project. How can I use cmake/makefile to scan modules/*.hpp files and add case statements in src/controller.cpp. The imported modules would also add a value into .hpp file containing enum with all of the module names.
