Yeah, a symptom of late stage capitalism that large companies no longer compete by improving their product or service, but by manipulating the regulatory environment and/or competition, through collusion, legal attacks, or acquisition. It's much less risky of an investment for larger companies post-mass-consolidation.
Honestly, though, they are the government in all but name at this point.

I hear you, fellow pleb, and I was ardently politically active for decades —until, at a protest vs Bush Jr's use of his appointed judges to put him back in office, I witnessed 4 swat pigs hogtie a 13yr old girl that was walking by the scene, and huck her in the wagon like a sack. (they also shot a senior vet w/ a "less than lethal" round in the crotch, etc. when he tried to tell them it was a "sit in").
I try to help wherever and however I can, but I'm pretty spent at this point after all these years of burning hard toward a dream, to be frank. 🥲🙇🏼♂️ I give what I can these days, but it's a fraction of what I used to give with exuberance and glowing hope inside.
I get it. I'm much less active then I was too. Just gotta find ways to improve our local community, and not be the resistance for the new energy.
Truth. I wish you luck, neighbor! I'm thinking I'll stick to game nights and social fulfillment for a while. If it all goes to shit, at least I'll have good memories of the way down. Besides, I'm tired of shadowboxing with fucknuts, ya know?

I feel it is never about having the money or not rather that for them it is a moral issue that it’s preferable to spend money on fewer people (political lobbying campaign) rather than the same total amount or even sometimes less on the many.
The same amount of money in fewer hands creates a choke-point that they can squeeze later.
They could have just spent that $1.4M improving conditions for their contractors...
It wouldn't have been nearly enough, they ended up owing like 100x that much. From a business standpoint that 1.4M was probably a reasonable amount to risk losing.

A while back I had a free month of dashpass but even with the money "saved" it was still about the same as if we actually dined out and tipped.
