I think I speak for the heterosexuals and gender binary when i say that the image is the 1995 and Western version of "why are u gae?" moment. It's the heteronormative society not comprehending the world outside of their own view. It's usually one likes either a man or a woman but can't be both. It reminds me of the debate whether or not Alexander the Great is gay. But as someone pointed, why argue if he liked either men or women, but never considered if both? Now i can see why bi-erasure is a thing.

Yes, Bisexuality was pioneered in 1995 by Sex corp. to sell more sex.
Omni and Pan were released by their competitors, but consumers don't really understand the difference, so everything gets call Bi the same way all adhesive bandages get called Bandaids.

This was 1995; sexuality was a "new" topic. Identifying as anything other than straight could literally cost you your life. It was 2 years before Ellen would come out publicly on TV because she feared losing her show and 3 years before Matthew Shepard was tortured and dragged to death for being gay.
A lot of boomers believed and probably still believe that being bisexual was the lazy way of not making a choice. The 90s are pretty romanticized now but it was a scary time for a lot of LGBTIA+ folks.

Everybody switched over to Pansexuality when it released in 2010.
Honestly I know this is unpopular but Pansexuality was a cash-grab. They just rereleased Bisexuality with a new marketing campaign.
Everybody most certainly did not switch over! They hard forked it and sure some people moved to the new fork because they liked the maintainers more and it has the community they vibe with, but a lot of people stayed with the old one and are still using it. The trademark stayed with the original fork, which means the new fork had to develop a new flag which not everyone in the community is stoked about...
There's a couple side-forks with small communities, like Omni, but most people consider them pretty niche.
And honestly bisexual is just such a stable fork overall. It functions well with mainstream architectures but also makes a great entry point into sexualities that aren't expressed in binary format. AND if you actually do the work of reading into the docs you find out that it's not even just limited to the traditional two-gender dichotomy. So if you really really need some super specific fork of a fork of a fork for some super specifically narrow use-case that's fine, but honestly in 90% of the cases bisexual actually covers most of the features you need and is widely recognized / compatible with the other stuff you're using with half the effort.
Edit: just wanna give a shoutout to my hubs. I grew up as a tumblr pan girl and honestly he's super based as a bi dude. First of all it's way harder to be bi as a dude and also he introduced me to the actual bi manifesto and how the bi's have always been super inclusive to begin with by not assuming there are two genders to begin with but also that trans girls & boys are just girls & boys so that aspect doesn't count as an extra gender to be attracted to anyway soooo. Mans has always been super based and I love him a lot.

At least they made it open source. Someone forked it after the bisexuality devs said they will not include non binary people. Migrating all my sexual fantasies to pansexuality already
