I... I thought it was an anti-joke for an embarrassingly long time (i.e. until now)
It's ok I also only learned this recently but that definitely is the intent of the original joke. I think most of us just hear it the first time while too young to get it
Also, ghosts don't cross by themselves.
Why?
...because the cross is always placed by those who weren't ghosts yet.
