I didn't build it, but I was raised by it. I was so hopeful when I was younger.

Honestly really glad, I'm tired of reading teenager opinions everywhere on the Internet

Not quite. I went here initially because I got permabanned on reddit. But I now realize reddit is a shithole so I like it here. I do wish there were more active niche communities and I really wish you could comment while on VPN, which you cant for some reason

Why can't you comment while on a VPN? I'm on a VPN right now and I'm commenting.

Also, I hate to tell you this, but reddit is the way it is because it's so popular. If we had the amount of people necessary to make niche communities thrive, it would be just like reddit. Well, at least as far as the people posting and so on. There wouldn't be any of the weird administrative stuff because it's run much differently. But the fact that the system is just like reddit's means that it attracts the same kinds of people and encourages the same kind of behavior.

Just like you can only find the specialty stores in the cities, where you'll also find parking and traffic problems

I'm not yet even close to 40, yet I still believe I am one of the "people who built the World Wide Web", in the sense that I've been posting to it for more than 20 years (there are still old forum posts online that I wrote at the age of 10), i.e. before it was something the general public did a lot.

I'm on the one hand proud of how much it has grown and how much more popular it has become; and on the other hand, worried that this has caused governments around the world to pay a lot more attention to it and limit our freedom on it through age verification laws and similar...

Hey no fair! I'm 30, I grew up on the Internet and hate what it became

I’m about half that age, and I’ve met at least a couple grads and undergrad students on here that I assumed were also in their 20s…

Also for people with severe superiority complexes

[–] crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 2 days ago (1 children)

who are all wrong. Clearly I'm the most superior.

I think there's two general kinds of people on the fediverse: Those who believe in whatever freedom, security, privacy, whatever, and the rest of us that came from somewhere else that went off the deep end of enshittification.

Love to be made to feel young in my mid thirties lol

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (9 children)

My take is that the fediverse is nice because it's still in its pre-enshittification phase. Give it time.

[–] mrmacduggan@lemmy.ml 24 points 2 days ago (3 children)

It's designed to resist corpo capture via interoperability... if it starts enshittifying, hopefully this will allow users to shift over without incurring too much switching cost keeping them in place

As per usual, something was used for greed that wasn’t initially meant to. They couldn’t for see it

The people who built the web aren't the ones responsible for its' consolidation.
