Hi,

I'm desperate for a good Todo app with proper Android notifications support, or at lease web push notifications from the browser.

Best I could find was Vikunja, but email notifications aren't very practical for multiple daily tasks with reminders.

Lately I've been trying to use Obsidian as my tracker for things to do, but it's just not that convenient for me and doesn't trigger notifications.

I know selfhosted push notifications isn't a simple problem to solve, so I don't have much hope got a solution.

I'm so close to going back to Todoist, which to me is the gold standard, you guys are my last attempt ๐Ÿ™

If you'd rather keep Vikunja as the backend and web UI, it has a CalDAV endpoint, so you can point DAVx5 at it and use Tasks.org or jtx Board on Android for the reminders themselves. That gets you native Android notifications without email, and you keep the web interface for planning. Vikunja's CalDAV side is less mature than its web UI, though, so test whether due dates and reminders come across the way you expect before moving everything over.

For notifications that aren't tied to a task app (say, "remind me when X happens" from a script or Home Assistant), ntfy is the simplest self-hosted push to Android, as mentioned above.

Baikal backend, DAVx5 android app and tasks.org android app.

Thats what you want. All open source.

Been using for notifications for a while and its great.

If super productivity + nextcloud ends up not being a good fit, i'll give this a try, thanks :)

I'm using a similar stack, Radicale on backend, DAVx5, and Calengoo as app.

Calengoo is not open source but you can buy it directly from the developer without Google integration. It's the only calendar app I've found that also does tasks properly, in that if I dismiss a task without explicitly marking it completed the notification will come back. It looks a bit strange out of the box but it has multiple themes and it's super configurable.

The one thing I don't like is that it uses a direct connection to CalDAV to mark tasks completed, instead of going through DAVx5 (not sure if it's a limitation in the Android chain or what).

yeah i do exactly this and it's very stable and unproblematic. has made a significant difference in my life

[โ€“] PeteWheeler@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah I guess I should of noted that this was like one of the first things I selfhosted 2 years ago and its like one of the very few things that never breaks or annoys me. It just works very reliably.

Plus you also self host your calendar and contacts list with this.

Oh nice, it has a sync system with nextcloud !

[โ€“] frischkaesbagett@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I use this for absolutely every managemnt of tasks. Can 100% recommend.

[โ€“] giant_smeeg@feddit.uk 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do you self host the sync server? Im using their infra atm but wondering if it's worth switcing.

[โ€“] frischkaesbagett@feddit.org 1 points 9 hours ago

I use the nextcloud of a friend. No problems there.

Also, if you wanted something more customized and jerry rigged, push notifications is very easy with ntfy. Its just a webhook so you could theoretically make anything a notification.

[โ€“] UnfairUtan@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Hadn't heart about ntfy, looks great for future projects, thanks !

[โ€“] iamthetot@piefed.ca 2 points 1 day ago

I don't use the notification functionality so take this recommendation worth a grain of salt, but I've been liking Donetick.

Not sure about notifications but have a look at jbx board

https://jtx.techbee.at/

[โ€“] autriyo@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

Jtx does notifications pretty competently. I've been using it with WebDAV sync for half a year roughly.

Set up is a little involved though, lots of settings and you need an extra app to actually handle the sync.

[โ€“] illusionist@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Jtx notifications are always on time and sticky if you want.
