Me at age now: actually the idea that at some point in their lives people start acting out of reason and not feelings is a myth and the only thing that is real is peoples ability to control narratives through story telling.

I was in my 40s when I finally accepted that grown-ups are a myth.

If you really want to feel like a grown up, make a Simpsons reference to one of your GenZ coworkers

I teach nights at a university for my side gig, and I have students this year who weren't born when the iPhone was released.

ive heard rumors about genz coworkers, but ive heard they are ultra rare.

And looking back, I don’t understand how I made it to thirty.

I feel like a knew for a lot longer than that, but goddamn does every passing moment just reinforce it harder and harder

Everyone younger than me is an ignorant child, everyone older than me is a senile fool, and everyone my age is just some dumbass.

Me? I'm kitty :3

Me at 50: I feel like I’m almost ready

We say that the brain is done developing around 25, but I don't really consider anyone "sensible" until they're 30.

I wasn't really truly sentient until I was like 35.

[–] leg@leminal.space 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

The brain never actually stops developing. We just have more fully realized hardware into our 30s, but we truly never stop maturing

[–] Zensate@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

That's a simplification, the brain keeps improving until it starts deteriorating. It isn't necessarily maturing, it's just getting better at what you're using it for, which could also be not-maturing.

Most people stop maturing around 14, at least that's what various attempts to find the average mental age have guessed at.

I doubt that it's a binary. Sure, there's a binary that could be used to describe the overall state of the brain, but my assumption is that it continues developing until death, just the maintenance load increases over time until it eventually overtakes the brain's ability to adapt and it looks like it's just declining, but consider what's actually going on for say a stroke victim to recover functionality. The brain is rewiring itself to make up for parts of it that ceased being functional brain matter.

I'd also consider forming new memories to be a kind of development, since they are encoded using neurons, connections, and whatever else goes into making our brains work.

[–] Zensate@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

Uniformly the body works in the same way; it keeps rejuvenating itself by replacing dead or dysfunctional material by building new.

When the entropic pressure becomes greater than its ability to rejuvenate, it slowly deteriorates and eventually dies.

And the brain functions the same.

And yet I feel like everyone else seemed to have it all figured out except me. Are we all just pretending?

[–] wifemademesignup@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago

I have people look up to me and it terrifies me. I do not have it all together people... but then I realise it's just I have it more together then the currently do.

So if i can help them get over the next bump in the road, maybe they can get ahead abs help me on my next bump.

Fumble together.

I think both Bilbo and Frodo went on their adventure when they were way into their 50s.

[–] CrazyLikeGollum@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

Bilbo was 50 at the start of the quest for Erebor.

Frodo was only 31 when he left the Shire.

Me at 40: how come Hobbits only get sick from poison or cursed objects?

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 3 points 22 hours ago

Got to be that stress-free lifestyle of having fifty neighbours who talk shit behind your back, being half the size of a wolf's mouth, and dealing with a local cryptid who worships the goddess of crying. Nobody's got time for the mumps with all that
