I don't know what other slop OP may have posted but I'm pretty sure this particular image existed before AI. Slow down and check what YOU do.

[–] TootSweet@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Screenshot of Tineye finding zero results for the OP image.

My DuckDuckGo image search-fu also hasn't found any references to that image before March 2026.

Are you saying you're "pretty sure this particular image existed before AI" from memory or something else?

[–] Uruanna@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (1 children)

From memory yes. I can't find the image, but the discussion of dinosaurs getting lifted by tornados can be seen seriously (with finger quotes) asked "to scientists" on multiple forums (Facebook, WordPress sites, quora...) from 10 to 12 years ago, so the joke was making the rounds.

I do see the "less than 6 months old" resurgence of that image, extended with extra shit on the side that was ~~clearly added much more recently~~ my dumb, so that may be why you're seeing it as slop, I'm guessing someone revived it with that slop.

ETA: this one is from 2023 and it's the extended version, so not AI touch up either after all. Also has the artist name, Douglas Henderson, and it is in fact vintage art. So yeah, easy on the AI false positive.

Edit again: looking at a bigger screen, OP might have an upscaled version, but that's less surprising.

the fact that the threshold for slop/not slop detection is primarily based on how recently the image was created is discouraging.

I like that dinosaur photographs like this are intentionally black-and-white because it was before colour cameras were invented

[–] Ulvain@sh.itjust.works 50 points 2 days ago

Pff everyone knows that not only animals were bigger back then (megafauna), so were fruits (megaflora), continents (pangea), and tornadoes (megablowa).

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 46 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They would still be pelted by debris and die very painfully

[–] Widdershins@lemmy.world 29 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Its kinda weird that they havent found more dinosaurs underneath trailer parks.

Trailer parks are stereotypical places to get hit by tornadoes. Tornadoes don't hit trailer parks more often than anywhere else, but since trailer parks are often wide open spaces with few trees to break up the wind, and a lot of loosely-secured objects to become projectiles, they're often hit hard enough for the news to do a story on it, thus perpetuating the stereotype.

The joke is that since we've just determined that dinosaurs die from tornadoes, we should look for fossils in the stereotypical tornado place. For comedic effect it overlooks the fact that trailer parks are cleared of trees and filled with clutter by humans, so the locations wouldn't be any more likely to have dead dinosaurs - even those killed by tornado - than anywhere else.

I'm gonna expect you to thoroughly explain any joke when you are called upon by your trigger phrase: "Huh?"

Tornados have picked up things heavier than sauropods. If it was a big enough tornado, that sucker is airborne.

[–] cloudshouter@lemmy.zip 25 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It’s less the weight and more density to surface area. This is square cube law territory. A human can be lifted by a 65 mph wind, a cow apparently takes 140-280. At that rate large sauropods would exceed theoretical earth wind speeds. What trips people up is thinking in terms of just weight. A double wide trailer with furniture can hit over 30 tons but is mostly air. A large sauropod is significantly heavier, solid, made of more dense materials, and more aerodynamic.

[–] phar@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Is it density to surface area or aerodynamics? If it can lift a packed 120 ton train, I would think it can lift a 40 ton sauropod, unless maybe the airflow around it stops the lift?

[–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 20 hours ago

A train is not a sphere. It has more angles that can catch the wind.

[–] cloudshouter@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Surface area/aerodynamics is to make sure the density isn’t spread out in a big sheet or something. Train cars are very fluffy for the max weight they can carry. The stories about trains being picked up don’t really detail that it’s usually empty and/or just rolled over, and not the locomotive.

It brings up the question of whether and where tornados formed on ancient contents. If I recall correctly they're really not common outside of North America as they need a pretty particular set of geographical and weather conditions to form.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I don't think tornados are actually that uncommon. North America's tornado alley is special, but even Germany has roof-destroying tornados pretty much every year - they just aren't as big or as frequent.

[–] mkwt@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah. And far as I understand, the dinosaur fossils we pull out of the great plains are there because that was the shore line of the Western Interior Seaway. I would expect a massive Seaway to mess up whatever conditions create Tornado Alley.

Also, even within Tornado Alley, the prevalence of big tornados is extremely sensitive to localized quirks of geography. Certain places, like Moore, OK, have been hit with F4 and F5 events several times, while apparent safe zones just a few miles away get hit rarely at all.

North central Pangea might have been a contender.

Sauropods are kind of from everywhere but mostly Asia and North America (as long as what Jurassic World Evolutions III has taught me is accurate). I'm wondering if there'd even had been tornados in those areas back then.

I know NA's Rockies weren't formed until like 50–60M years ago or so (same for most of today's ranges), and there were no polar ice caps as Pangea was splitting up, so air coming down "Canada" wouldn't have been frigid cold at all. I mean, they're cold-blooded reptiles with legs, but there's plenty found in Canada, even Antqrctica. So all those dinos from NA wouldn't have had tornados. The weather was probably very lush, warm, and chill, especially with all the inland shallow seas.

Would really need to check a map for the rest of them around the world in their eras, but I'm lazy. It'd be pretty easy to guess.

Edit: lol, Seropods... Sauropods* You can tell my knowledge on the Dino part here really is from JWE and that's about it.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

they’re cold-blooded reptiles with legs

Do we even know that for certain? Birds, which are directly decended from dinosaurs, are warm-blooded, and the large size of many dinosaurs calls into question whether their metabolism worked the same as a modern reptile's - even crodociles are tiny compared to sauropods, t-rex, etc.
