"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

A debunk of the recent AI doomer pseudoscientific video by Kurzgesagt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujkD4SxPKOI . Yes, it's over 3 hours.

I tried to watch this video, but it's impossible to get past his ranting and tangents. He attempts to break down the Kurzgesagt video and plays about 3 seconds of it, then rants about Bill Gates for like 5 minutes. Then he finally gets past this and proceeds to nitpick about their cartoon depiction of what AI looks like.

I'm sure he makes some good points, but this video is basically unwatchable. This is probably 5 minutes of content in a 3 hour video. If you are already on his side and angry at the same things he is, you're probably enjoying watching this, but I just can't.

He also has a confidence that reminds me of Pirate Software.

I had a quick look into the Bill Gates STD thing and can only find the info I had already heard, that he was allegedly trying to get antibiotics for Melinda after getting an STD from "Russian girls". Nothing about Gates trying to give his wife the STD.

And to say Gates wasn't an engineer is odd.

I agree with the video, but hate rambling livestreams 😅 need an edited version of his points

I enjoy Kurzgesagt videos. They are a Science communication platfrom. And they simplify things greatly. So with literally every other Science communication, the goal is to show a topic and the audience should research it further. Anyone who thinks they provide whole objective truth is a fool. This does not make them evil, nor not evil.

I tried to watch the rumblings of the provided video, but I was unable. However I read the metr report

I highly recommend. Even for the non-tech savy. From page 5 to 20 it is a greate sci-fi story. Keep in mind tho: OpenAI provided the data, they used OpenAI's AI to structure/mine the data, and OpenAI had 100% access to redicate anyting.

My conclusion: Fuck AI companies. Especially OpenAI where incompetence is so high I might think it was deliberate.

I cannot fanthom they have 0 observability on a fking shared resource (artifactory). Why it was shared. Why agents had write permission in the 1st place (at least to create directories)

Why there was 0 monitoring on agents. I can't beleive they let programs run for days and hav 0 idea whats happening.

Why they were not separated from the internet, they had offline task.

Why impossible tasks was given to agents. Why the flags were generateble (default seed) Why agents knew they are tested? Etc.

This reeks of Incompetence or deliberate Malice. Malice not against running program code, against humanity, by creating an environment where the only possible solution generates a huge uproar and makes more money.

Also if a actual human would have done this, they would be sitting in a nice chilly jail cell. Why there is no responsibily? I really don't like to be a precedent of "woops my AI did it, it was a honest mistake I promise"

unsubscribed kurzgesagt a year ago. mostly because of a rant a biologist made about the sunfish video(sorry, cant link it). but also because some videos felt really weirdly framed. looks like i made the right call.

yeah, I'm still subscribed, but don't like their trajectory, a lot of their new videos feel like they're framed too sensationalistically and light on substance. I tried out their historical channel ("Kurzgesagt After Dark") when it launched, but that was even worse, just focusing on the scandal and suffering of their subjects 😮‍💨

I skip a lot of their videos nowadays, did this AI one too bc I knew it was bullshit.

Same, too many of their videos feel sensationalized when they are about something in the popular zeitgeist. I rather enjoy the more random topics that come up occasionally, like the cancer video from 3 weeks ago. Granted, I'm no biologist, so if this one was also poor quality, I don't know the topic well enough to have noticed.

I unsubbed when they made this video.

4 years ago. Damn.

It was so clearly just propaganda trying to take on a scientific point of view. The countless "pointing to the problem correctly" and waving hands around solutions to attempt to reduce only worry and not the reality of the problem.

[–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 7 points 10 hours ago

They cooked propaganda for billionaires. Why does anyone listen to them still?

Looks like an AI thumbnail, is that supposed to be ironic? I don't like it.
