I like it because I don’t have to talk to people. It is otherwise an inferior experience.

I don't think this means they are actually pulling out.

Its unclear to me if the 36% is bc they already have the tech so they don't plan to invest further and new adoption don't happen bc everyone who "needs" it already has it or if the ones who have it are planning to get rid of it.

To me it just sounds like the people at the top didn't foresee the problems that actually arise in a real world setting and their overconfidence gets adjusted to a more reasonable outlook but the self checkout will not go anywhere, 36% is still a pretty big number, self checkout might just not be feasible for a lot of places in the first place.

I see it being implemented in more places not less, they are just finetuning it now.

I don't think it is a pullout, it is saturation. You can only have so many self-checkout stations before the effectiveness of adding more diminishes.

I think this weird anti-self-checkout crowd is just young people who don’t remember the times before self-checkouts. Even if every checkout was manned it was still completely normal to wait upwards of ten minutes, even when it wasn’t that busy. I remember my Mum excitedly running to a checkout because there was only one person queueing there. Nowadays I totally expect there to be no queue at all and I feel hard done by if I have to queue for more than one minute.

Um, no. There are many other categories of people who have issues with self-checkouts. Like anyone who's legally or by the store's rules due a discount or tax waiver (people with Indigenous status aren't required to pay sales taxes in some jurisdictions, for instance), since the software often fails to account for these. Anyone paying cash. Anyone who knows anything at all about UI design or has wrestled with a self-checkout that just doesn't function properly.

I'll wait in line rather than deal with a machine that's broken by design, thanks. Fortunately, the stores around here mostly have reasonable staffing practices, so the wait isn't long unless some idiot tries to price-match against a flyer or something else weird and unusual.

self checkouts facilitate logging your purchase data, imcluding your biometrics and facial data.

The shop is not paying me enough to do their job. Plus I never agreed to do any of it.

I use cash, go to cashier or kiosk every time or leave shopping items behind if closed as matter of principle..

Self-checkout was a boon because reduced wages to process customers (in theory).

Now they have an even better mechanism to push: delivery and pickup. Keep the customers away from the merchandise except what they have already paid for. Wal-Mart pushing the promise of free delivery under 22 minutes when I go to check if they have something in-store.

It's only free until they hook you.

I don't like self checkout. Every time I feel I'm doing their cashier job for free.

I'm waiting for them to close the stores to customers entirely and go to pick up or delivery only.

I know that would kill impulse buying, but I think they might make it up by not needing to police the isles, and no theft.

Service Merchandise did tag pulls and pick up at the register for everything back in the 70s and 80s. That might come back.

I don't get why people think they will be more efficient and faster than someone who's used to pass products all day. Cashiers already know where to look for the barcodes and remember the codes for vegetables without having to look anywhere. Self-checkout is only faster in the beginning because few people use it. When it becomes the only option, prepare for even longer queues with people passing the products in such calmness as if they're doing it in purpose

They are slower than regular checkout lines and only benefit the stores. When things go wrong at a self checkout you inevitably sit there for a long time waiting for someone from the store to get around to helping. If theres a problem checking out, the blame for it falls on you. I despise all of them.

Ah so the genius executives behind these will be held accountable by shareholders and fired right? Right?
