I laminsted mine no one complained. Of course the laminate wears out to. Did you know you are allowed to get 10 replacements period. So if you lose our wear out 10 of those you stuck without getting anymore.

I just keep it in a sandwich bag

What about all the oil, vinegar, and other toppings?

Lol can you just put it in a hard plastic card collecting container? Like for Pokemon?

[–] starik@lemmy.today 9 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

You can laminate it. It says not to, but you can do it anyway.

[–] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 7 points 1 hour ago

I did 30 years ago and it's never been an issue

[–] cheers_queers@lemmy.zip 22 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

just leave it in an envelope with your other important documents on file. i dont get why people carry it around

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

Have these people never had to take care of any sort of important document? Like how do you treat contracts or education certificates?

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 hours ago

Education certificates? Those are mostly useless after you've got your first post-college job. And the majority of people have never and will never sign a contract where a paper copy will be required in the future.

[–] AnchoriteMagus@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 hours ago

Not really. Most under-30's these days have no experience or education in how or why to preserve important papers. It's just not common these days.

I laminated mine back in '92 and now I think I'll make parole next year.

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

I laminated mine. I've never had a problem with it.

it wasn't meant to be a national ID, but states pushed against issuing one, so had to use the closest thing everyone gets

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 10 points 2 hours ago

This. It's a national ID on a de facto basis and is very ill-suited for it, and not just because it's made of paper instead of plastic.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 1 hour ago

You can't laminate the original; but you can make a copy and laminate that.

[–] Bluegrass_Addict@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 hours ago (3 children)

can't you just memorize the number?

[–] ElChinchilla@lemmy.world 1 points 4 minutes ago
[–] AnchoriteMagus@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 hours ago

Yes, and for most things, just the memorized number will be fine, but for stuff like applying for govt programs, getting a job, or obtaining a passport, the actual physical card is needed, unless you have enough other forms of ID.

[–] farmgineer@nord.pub 5 points 2 hours ago

You need to present it in certain cases (usually government stuff) as a part of ID verification. Other than that, I think everyone does just use the number since it is needed for tax forms every year. I'm old enough that my uni student ID used to be this number before they realized what a terrible ID that is (name, address, birthday, and SSN used to be enough to open bank accounts, credit cards, start/stop utilities, etc.)
