AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Brought to you by the creators of, "just give them an ipad" and "call the cops there's a kid outside playing"

Parenting hits different when your intelligence is artificial

I know this is about the AI but the unaddressed elephant in the room is that people romanticize the idea of having children and realizing it's not what they expected or really wanted. Society constantly puts pressure on people having kids.

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 10 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I know people who would die to have children so they can see them become successful well adjusted adults. Those people can have kids.

I also know people who dont want to have kids. They dont have to.

I also also know people who really want kids, but in the way a person would want a dog, so they can train it to be good, hit it when its bad, and itll never be older than 3 years because they havent thought that far ahead. These people should be sterilized.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Hah yeah I agree on the last statement. That's why I have such a negative outlook on the subject. Once you fill out CPS reports, you start to have more negative outlooks such as maybe there should be a license to have kids.

people romanticize the idea of having children and realizing it's not what they expected

dude....so much this.

I had zero romantic thoughts of having kids. I didn't even want them, honestly. my wife and literally everyone around us on the other hand, very much so wanted us to have kids.

don't judge though. as a current parent I don't ignore my responsibilities and fully intend on giving my kids the best I can. at least, a better more loving home than I had.

but man, life would be so much easier without them. I literally could be on a beach somewhere in the world right now if I didn't have kids. have lunch in Paris. then stop by in Denmark for some dinner.

by the time they can stand on their own I'll be dead. so now I can only save money in hopes to help soften any financial hardships they will need to endure.

I've been playing around with the idea of recording some "dad's wisdom" videos for them when they get older and I'm not around.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

The video idea sounds pretty good.

I went separate ways with my ex-fiancee over this topic. It wasn't so much as I was against having kids, I had conditions such as financial stability and owning a home. And deep down I didn't want to take care of two people and be financially responsible for everything, my ex-fiancee already had a hard time holding down a job.

But like you said, even now that I have my own place, I'm more motivated to travel than get into that lifestyle. I'm sure I would have been a decent parent having worked in education but the tradeoffs are too steep for me.

[–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world 38 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

That's not true. My father was a terrible parent and that was decades ago. Tech Bros. think they invented bad parenting now.

[–] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 10 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly the best thing my father could have done for me was not try to parent me because he was a fucking asshole that had no idea how to relate to children. I guess you could say I'm a glass half full kind of guy.

I thought this was satire, but it appears to be real.

Me: "Why dont you come visit and talk to me in the nursing home?"

My kids: "just talk to grok"

[–] Prior_Industry@lemmy.world 23 points 18 hours ago

I'm sure there is a good few older people who would find a lot of comfort in Groks world view.

Parenting hits really different when you’re an idiot and a sociopath.

Alvin there doesn’t want to bother talking to his child.

Parenting hits different when you work in AI

Yeah, hits like mental abuse.

I knew people were gonna be obsessed with AI, but I genuinely never thought people would surrender all executive function and thought to what is, ultimately, a very elaborate and planet destroying if=then machine.

the amount of people I have seen becoming totally dependent on it is ridiculous. There are people who cant even have human interaction anymore without running it through their AI model to process the message, and produce a reply.

and its 100% invading the real world too, I dont know the whole details cause you try to turn your ears off at the pharmacy to not hear other peoples private information.. but there was a woman getting very heated with one of the pharmacy people and I only took notice when she slammed her phone on the counter, aggressively pointed at it, and said very loudly "I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU SAY, LOOK, RIGHT HERE, MY AI SAYS YOU'RE WRONG" in a that kareny way that says her and her AI was 100% wrong.

[–] LePoisson@lemmy.world 13 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

Damn I try to keep my mouth shut but if someone screamed that near me I'd be interjecting. Like goddamnit the AI does not know anything.

It's a machine modeling human speech. It's all a hallucination and sometimes that hallucination is straight up lies and sometimes, hopefully most of the time, it aligns with actual reality.

I fucking loathe that people won't take 15 minutes to just read a basic primer on what an LLM is. It's a fancy autocorrect, and yeah it's way more complex than that but at the end of a day it's made to model realistic human language output - and that's it. It doesn't have any actual knowledge, it doesn't have any way to know if what it says is true or not, and it certainly doesn't know if what it says is insane.

If this is real that guy is an absolute psycho who probably shouldn't be responsible of children.

[–] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 9 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

This reminds me of the programmer who wrote a script to text his girlfriend at random intervals to say one of a list of phrases like "I am thinking about you," or "How is your day going?" Big tech thinks that all human interaction can be automated and when it comes to getting people addicted to and entirely dependent on social media they are kind of right.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 7 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

The concept of "it's the thought that counts" is lost on these people.

Seriously, how do they not see the issue with automating a script that says "I'm thinking of you".

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago

I know right, make her text you

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 77 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (2 children)

That poor kid, Imagine your own father thinks so little of you that he would rather spend 10X the time to train a clanker just so he doesn't have to spend time with you.

I'm guessing some day he will be one of those oblivious assholes on facebook whining because his kids cut off contact.

His wife is going to leave him, and he will have no idea why.

He will ask ChatGPT and it will give him an answer

"Tremendous observation! You were right to try to be better as a father with the help of AI. You did nothing wrong."

Probably.

I'm so glad AI is here to relieve me of the physically and mentally overwhelming task of checks notes spending time with my child.

Man, I feel kinda sorry for that guy. He must have had terrible parents, if he perceives story time as a chore instead of an opportunity to bond with your child. He should probably get some professional help to work through his horrible childhood. Though his next tweet would probably be „I‘ve replaced my therapist with an AI and now I‘m even more confident that everyone else is wrong!“
