my grandma gave me her old honda civic and it only has like 10k miles on it 😭 my dad keeps saying it’s a really good car but like... i cannot be seen driving this ancient thing πŸ’€

For me, this would be like winning the lottery.

That an Accord, not a Civic. Which implies the post is fake because if you got a car, you'd know what it was even without being a car person.

My wife had a 2000 Accord. I thought they were amazing based only on reputation. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good. Transmission failed after 7 years. Changing the cabin air filter required dissembling the entire passenger side trim. An emissions sensor was buried down so deep you had to blind reach your arm into a crevice to reach. On my Sienna you didn't even need to get your hands dirty- It was front and center on top of the engine.

My '91 Accord was a breeze to fix. Brakes gave out at just the wrong moment one rainy night, though. RIP

The transmission is what failed on my old Honda Accord, too. It was a fun car. There's really no need for it to have that much acceleration, but I appreciated it. It was handy for passing people.

10k on a civic is a new car. Unless it's from the 90s, but even then, enjoy your high efficiency privacy and at least 120k more miles of uninterrupted low maintenance.

That style isn't even that old.

Dude cherish those cars. I have a 2011 Prius with 650k miles on it and I'm never letting this fucker go. I've already engine swapped once successfully.

They call it ancient but use the word β€œonly” for the mileage, I’m getting mixed signals

Depending on how old it is, could be a nightmare of forgotten maintenance.

Still an absolute steal as far as condition goes

There's not that much maintenance that needs to be done at the 10k mile mark.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Plus those Hondas lasted forever, with very little maintenance.

That model/year didn't. Sometime in the late 90's they enshitified.

Any belts/tires, any fluids and their containers/tanks, the battery, etc would (imo) need replacing if not used in a long time. Dry rubber splits and breaks easier than frequently used rubber, fluids decay, plastics rot/dry

Shhh it's fiiiine

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

That looks like a mid-2010s vehicle, like maybe a 2015?

Like worst case, it needs new tires, and all of the fluids flushed.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 2 points 1 week ago

Pfft. Replace the tires and belts, and repair small oil leaks as needed.

A free car is a free car. Drive it anyway, and every month, put $300 in a separate bank account. Let it accumulate a couple of years, and you'll be able to sell your Honda, add the money to your savings, and have enough for a significant down payment on something really nice.
