Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

It's like being stuck behind a glass wall in my own head - watching myself be stuck unable to do what needs to get done

I'm right now stuck in a fucked up spot with this. There's a funeral tomorrow that I need to go to, for myself, my friends, the person who has passed and her family. The past three weeks since she passed, from sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), has been fucking fucked. I've only been able to sleep every two nights, just from exhaustion, but I've been fully focused on saving any and all possible energy to get to this funeral. I'm in bed and my downstairs neighbour who moved in a couple of weeks ago has people over and they're all kinds of fucked up, loud talking, shouting, stumbles, going in and out of the apartment etc. I've banged on the walls and the floor but they seem way too gone to even hear it. I should call in a disturbance report but I'm so far from being able to do that, it would fuck my whole night as much as it does just letting them be. I'm so stuck that I'm crying on the inside but unable to do so physically and it's all just hitting me like a rain of cannonballs. There's one thing I hope can help, music, but my earpods are in the kitchen and even turning in bed feels too much right now. I don't know how to het out of this, just stuck.

Just wanted to say I read your post and thanks for sharing. I can't help directly over the Internet, but I hope that writing it down helped you distance yourself a bit from the frustration.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 4 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I get past this by accepting that I'm not going to get everything done, picking the highest priority thing (or whatever I want to do the most if they're the same) and reframing it as "Everything else can wait, I need to get this done today". It's not ideal but it does usually work that least get one thing off the list. Sometimes getting the one thing done will even get the juices flowing to start knocking other things off the list too.

[–] LemmySuxNow@reddthat.com 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Hah. Imagine being able to tell what is the highest priority or what you want.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 2 points 19 hours ago

Throw a dart at the wall then. The point is to filter as much of the noise as you can and get moving.

[–] eletes@sh.itjust.works 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I've been floundering with this project. They've given me some deadlines and as usual my panic centers are lighting up and I'm starting to work on it.

I hate this cycle

[–] Flukeyfox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 21 hours ago

Yeah I know that feeling, being the most motivated only by severe pressure of the quickly approaching deadline 😅 How I managed through uni with a good grade is beyond me sometimes lol. Meds helped a bit with that for me though

[–] Avicenna@programming.dev 1 points 20 hours ago

Why am I not doing them right now?

Because I just remembered you can install Seven Kingdoms II for free on Linux

I still haven't moved my standing fan from my room back into storage. It's fall. The heater kicked on a few days ago and I still haven't moved the fan back...

[–] smokeymcpott@feddit.org 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

But the fan can help to distribute the heat better.

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 1 points 8 hours ago

Ehhh it makes too much noise and can't be made to run slower and quieter. I'd rather stash it.

Something something, therapist asking if I've dealt with getting a new psych for meds yet...... ;-;

[–] nialv7@lemmy.world 35 points 1 day ago (11 children)

we should normalize doing nothing at all. the society's demand for everyone to be productive at all times is a sickness that must be eradicated.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

that's cool but i still need to do the fucking laundry at some point

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 1 points 8 hours ago

Let it become an civilization, and be its god.

[–] Shayeta@feddit.org 15 points 1 day ago

No, I want to do stuff. I don't want people to tell me it's ok to just lay and rot. Occasional moments of respite are good, but not this.

[–] Klanky@sopuli.xyz 31 points 1 day ago

I completely agree, but I think there is a balance to be struck if you need to be productive to take care of your living area. I love to do nothing and am proud of that, but I also want a clean kitchen and bathroom.

Yep, some days better or worse than others. I missed my usual dose time for my Elvanse so today is a no-meds day. Maybe a do little and play Stardew day

[–] PiraHxCx@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 days ago (4 children)

I was on amphetamines once and it worked so well, but doctors keep putting me on other shit that does nothing despite I always repeating amphetamines worked...

I'm pretty good at pushing past those points. Just pushing, pushing, pushing until I collapse especially when I have someone else to push for.

The graphical artifacting of mental illness.

People thinks of themselves as machine following a spreadsheet plan. In reality we desperately NEED of times like these to just stop, and do...

...not.

...a.

...fucking.

...thing.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 22 hours ago

I call them burn days.

I've burned weeks.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 23 hours ago

the problem here is that it's been a single continous moment for my entire life, and there are in fact things that i want to do but it just doesn't happen.

I hope you're not saying that it's good to play minecraft until my body starts screaming at me loudly enough that i finally get off my ass and refill my water bottle? because it's really not good

[–] Flukeyfox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 24 points 1 day ago

In one way, I agree, but unfortunately with Executive Dysfunction it can also affect your need to eat or look after yourself, as your brain just fails to assign or prioritise tasks. It gets really bad for me if I am or was recently overstimulated, or if I'm having a depressive episode.

I've had days where all I needed to do was have a shower, go to the shop, eat food then go play a game since it was the weekend. But the dysfunction hit so hard I couldn't do any of it so just sat staring at a wall for an hour and doomscrolling for another few hours. I'd have preferred to have just played the game, but since that was one of my planned tasks, I couldn't bring myself to do it.

Took majority of the day before I could break out of it and get to the shop before they closed. Almost sounds odd when explaining it but the brain is an unusual thing sometimes...

But yeah I do agree that sometimes people work themselves too hard and need to find time to stop and give time to themselves

Right. In some situations, that's probably the right thing. I'm not sure about OP's situation, but this comic resonates with me for the following scenarios (among many, many others):

  • doing my taxes
  • applying for jobs
  • making a GP appointment for mental health issues, or literally anything else
  • planning my wedding
  • doing the laundry
  • sending a "happy birthday" text to my brother (literally just "Happy birthday!" and a suitable emoji would do)

In all of these cases, I know what to do, and I want to do it, and I'm able to do it. I just don't. Somehow, I just don't. I just can't get myself to do the thing. If that doesn't resonate with you, or your immediate reaction is "oh, just do the thing!", then maybe you're not the target audience of this comic.

It's been months. Since perimenopause started it's been almost impossible to break task paralysis. I went and got diagnosed, got medication, noting is helping. Deal with ADHD before you get old, don't end up like me.

[–] applebusch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

just out of curiosity have you tried hrt? might be worth considering if you havent.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 2 points 20 hours ago

Not yet, figured I'd try the medication route first since I had a hormone panel done and it was still reasonably ok. I plan to though, if all else fails. I have a long list of endocrine conditions, I wouldn't be surprised if it helps more than I think it will.

[–] BottleBoardBakon@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Just throwing it out there, but how's your sleep?

I have adhd and recently discovered I have sleep apnea as well. I was at wits end before I got my cpap. The combination is a wombo combo for executive disfunction.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 2 points 20 hours ago

Like most neurodivergent people, my sleep is shit and thinly held together with medication and weed. Before my mood stabilizer I really struggled, but it helps me sleep now. Still, I have to sleep much longer than most people and I'm still exhausted all day. Hypervilligance takes it out of my brain.

[–] blackouttripleseven@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

literally me rn

comp sci project due tomorrow and writing assignment due yesterday but not doing anything bc brain is too drained

[–] Flukeyfox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 day ago

That's rough... Good luck though!

Hopefully you'll have some possible downtime after the assignments? Even just for a few days or so?

It’s hard to do normal things when “once in a lifetime” things keep happening all around us. I’m just trying to fold laundry and do dishes, meanwhile Pete Hugsucker is deflecting his ineptitude by threatening a live execution for a paraplegic man, the orange dumpster fire is… being the orange dumpster fire.

Life is hard right now and I’m just becoming more and more grateful I survived another day, even if all I did was couch rot.
