Even aside from the problem with the face, the "upscaled" version lacks a lot of character. He's visibly dirty in the original and completely clean in the new one. I think maybe part of the "too clean" look in the new one is because the original is on old, worn parchment which affects the image and the new version's "upscaling" doesn't take that into account. Some of the saddle fades out as well as if it's on worn paper, but the "fade out" on the "upscaled" version looks more like a design-choice gradient than wear.
This is what happened to the remastered Warcraft games. They just look like flash games. All clean upscaling. No character whatsoever. They look awful.
