Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Let him cook

Seems like super large rice grains would be likely end up having too much starch relative to other nutrients. Either that or the bran would be super thick and almost kind of woody. Or both.

It's just grass, exactly the same as corn and wheat and oats. Those are also eaten as individual units sometime.

“On a traffic light green means ‘go’ and yellow means ‘yield’, but on a banana, it’s just the opposite. Green means ‘hold on,’ yellow means ‘go ahead,’ and red means, ‘where the hell did you get that banana?’”

If you're only eating the one rice, it's just called a rouse

That's tteokbokki, and it's delicious.

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Isn't that more like a rice version of gnocchi?

Yes, it's delicious.

tteokbokki

I thought the rice cakes were called garaetteok - 가래떡, and tteokbokki - 떡볶이 is the dish made with them and spicy sauce and fish cakes.

Either way, it’s delicious.

The big version is called corn. They're both grass seeds after all.

Corn is at most three times as large

[–] Malgas@beehaw.org 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The corn they use to make hominy is bigger than that.

Not an 8oz kernel, admittedly, but definitely double digit rice grain equivalent.

[–] N0tTr0xy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

hominy

That is indeed huge

Edit: That is processed. The kernels look thaat large. Biggest form of rice is puffed

[–] Malgas@beehaw.org 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean, the direct comparison for puffed rice would be popcorn.

The processing for hominy is just soaking in in lime water so that the tough outer skin softens and can be removed. But it is usually made from varieties whose kernels are huge to begin with. (Look up giant white corn.)

[–] N0tTr0xy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

Look up giant white corn

Okay, yeah. The Wikipedia article about the processing confused me.

direct comparison for puffed rice would be popcorn.

Yes, but I’ve never seen popcorn used in meals. Popped rice has a maggot-like shape and is used with sauce, beans and such

If I had a dollar for every time I heard that...

Rice is too small

Seems like it would be easier to pick off the tree this way too.

Yes! Kinda (ground like flour).

I can't speak for all the variations, of which I'm sure there are many, but I love mochi.

It's for a really nice chewy, gelantinous texture.

My favorite is a version called Hawaiian butter mochi.

Nice, thanks.
