That's funny, I had a kid that applied to all those jobs including McDonald's and Dairy Queen. Not a single call back to even interview.

Fortunately the school expects to hook the kid up with an internship, but we will see how that actually turns out.

What kind of experience do they have?

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Zero paid work experience, some manual labor through volunteering. Hence trying to get on at entry level some way or another.

From colleagues with kids similarly getting into the workforce, similar bad luck. Except one guy who owns a company and could hire his own kid, lot more trouble getting work going than I remember at that age.

Folks assuming this generation is too picky and not trying and that everyone can get a job at McDonald's if they can put aside their ego are completely out of touch with things. Yes, back in the 90s you could walk into 5 fast food places and land a basic job, now not so much.

Can confirm how soul destroying it is currently for the youngins.

These people need to justify their immense privilege, so they attribute nearly everything they did to their success instead of mostly luck.

I think this is somewhat bad advice. Young people are better off focusing on their education and skill development (if they are currently pursuing an education). Working at McDonald's and Dairy Queen will teach you nothing you can't quickly "learn" later, and it can often hurt your education (e.g. if you work late).

I don't think it's uncommon for management prey on the more vulnerable young workers either. I worked multiple fast food jobs. At one, the manager was caught giving drugs to and statutory raping multiple underage employees (he was the owner's son and in his 30s); and at another, a manager threatened to fire an underage employee unless he had sex with her (she was in her 40s). The only reason you should work any job is if you need the money and you haven't been able to get a better one yet.

Big you will work 3 jobs, still not make enough or have 40hrs a week and be happy at the opportunity energy

I don't think that's what Jeff would do. Is he being stupid?

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 1 points 6 days ago (2 children)

He did, in fact, work at McDonald's when he was young.

[–] Ravine@lemmus.org 6 points 6 days ago

So did lots of people. Why use an evil slave driver as a reference?

I didn't know that. High school job apparently. The earliest of his work with which I had any familiarity was at a hedge fund called Shaw.

In context, his time at McD still has exactly zero to do with his success. It didn't get him into a Princeton eating club, that's for sure.

In light of the new evidence I'll upgrade Mark's comment from 'total non-sequitur' to 'false equivalence in bad faith'.

If it was my interview and I had to think of what could have given Jeff the singular, all-encompassing drive to become as wealthy as possible from an early age, it's right there on his wiki page. Dad was a broke unicyclist and a drunkard. That'd give anyone a complex.

Oh, I'm not saying it is relevant or helpful. I just like criticism to be factual. Or at least not inaccurate.

Why don't these lazy Gen Z kids ask their wealthy parents for a small loan of $2 million to start their own business.
