When politicians and economic actors stoke fear and scapegoat marginalized communities to protect the status quo, we are forced to play into harmful narratives that continue to divide us. Racial division becomes a tool that keeps neighbors blaming each other instead of holding decision makers and profiteers accountable for continual wage stagnation, disinvestment, exclusionary housing policy, and the systemic criminalization of poverty. If we refuse that bait and organize together across race and class, we can demand solutions that do more than manage harm: deeply affordable and social housing, strong tenant protections, community-based mental health and healthcare, investments in Indigenous and Black-led land and housing initiatives, and an end to punitive encampment removals that destroy what little stability people have.
