AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

AI-generated music is appealing to streaming services, not least because it could potentially eliminate royalty payments and boost profits. While providers such as Qobuz are distancing themselves from AI-generated music, Tidal and Spotify already have very lax AI policies. According to a report by the Financial Times, Spotify is now planning a full-scale AI push, set to launch as early as the first quarter of 2027.

The streaming market leader is apparently adding an optional AI package to its Spotify Premium subscription, reportedly costing $4 to $5 per month, which could make the service's Premium subscription up to 39 percent more expensive. Those willing to pay these additional costs are expected to receive two main new features. First, the ability to have artificial intelligence regenerate existing songs as remixes. And second, the option to generate any song as a cover version by any band, thereby changing the song's style.

Lol, why would anyone pay for slop? I wouldn't accept this even if they paid me. I like my music exactly the way the artist made it, that's why he's an artist after all. Damn morons at Spotify...

[–] LazyOldPervert@lemmus.org 1 points 1 hour ago

Then I plan a 100% cancellation

[–] yes@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 hours ago

One weird trick, install Soulseek.

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Spotify is screwed, SaaS companies are going down due to AI.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 14 points 6 hours ago

Ohh stop, I can't use them less than zero :)

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 10 points 8 hours ago

There are FOSS alternatives to this junk, folks.

I made a video about it earlier this year because I absolutely, fucking hate Spotify with the fire of a thousand suns.

The TL:DW, though, is the apps Metrolist and OuterTune.

I'm not sure I understand.

Can you pay extra to not get AI slop music?

[–] laere@quokk.au 9 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

There's already an audiobook subscription add-on. It's going to be like that probably. But at least that had extra content that cost Spotify money. Paying more for royalty free robot covers doesn't make sense.

[–] mofongo@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 8 hours ago

That's coming up next for an extra $20.

[–] dumnezero@piefed.social 24 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Stop fucking using slopify!

[–] explorer1337421@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago (3 children)

What alternative do you propose?

[–] regdog@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

I am pretty happy with Deezer

[–] dumnezero@piefed.social 0 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Make a post and ask. This isn't the first time this question has been put.

[–] explorer1337421@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

An actual proposal would have cost you less characters to type :D

[–] bad1080@piefed.social 6 points 10 hours ago

they gonna pay royalties on those remixes, correct?

[–] schema@lemmy.world 31 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Cancelled that shit back when they became a platform for right wing grifters.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 17 points 13 hours ago

and now AI music, because roegan wasnt enough apparently.

[–] Vogons@fedinsfw.app 13 points 12 hours ago

If anyone else is a classical music nut (I am) I really recommend Hyperion Records. DRM free downloads with a choice of CD, FLAC, aac or mp3, and an average of two monthly samplers (with PDFs for the jewel case!) Oh, and they support actual starving artists and are very independent and all round excellent.

Failing that, I hear Orpheus is good...

The streaming market leader is apparently adding an optional Al package to its Spotify Premium subscription, reportedly costing $4 to $5 per month, which could make the service's Premium subscription up to 39 percent more expensive.

This sentence is nonsensical - if you get an optional addon, then it's per definition not a price increase.

It's like if I went to the grocery store, bought the same items as before and then added several more to the cart, and claimed that "my grocery bill has increased". Apples and oranges.

Drm free from bandcamp and cds for me

[–] df0@leminal.space 5 points 6 hours ago

This is how I acquire music since a few years back too. More actively seeking out new music instead of eating the algorithm also made music much more fun again.

[–] lichtmetzger@discuss.tchncs.de 112 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

First, the ability to have artificial intelligence regenerate existing songs as remixes.

Corpos are truly out of ideas.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 hours ago

We made them this way by swallowing their shit for decades. No wonder they think it'll work again this time.

[–] RedGreenBlue@lemmy.zip 16 points 14 hours ago

I'll predict that it's not gonna be worth 5$.

[–] D_Tom@lemmy.world 38 points 17 hours ago (6 children)

I would recommend Qobuz to anyone who wants almost the same ease of use, but with higher audio quality.

This is why I buy cds from the artists I like . I have never and will never pay for a music streaming service. I prefer to cut out as many middlemen as possible.

[–] AmyAye@nord.pub 1 points 6 hours ago

Yeah, I buy a ton of digital and vinyls. Mostly for this reason.

Digital priority

Artist's website

Bandcamp

7digital

HD Tracks

Amazon Music

[–] lichtmetzger@discuss.tchncs.de 21 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

This is why I buy cds from the artists I like .

I have a 50GB MP3 collection that I have curated since I was a teenager. Every time I hear news about streaming services, I watch from the sidelines and grab some popcorn.

[–] SwooshBakery624@programming.dev 5 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Why MP3 and not lossless tho?

[–] lichtmetzger@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 4 hours ago

I started with 128kbps MP3s (I was dumb when I was young as we all were) so I just stayed with the format. Nowadays they're all much higher bitrate and I honestly don't hear the difference.

[–] dumnezero@piefed.social 9 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

smaller is more portable tho.

(opus)

[–] SwooshBakery624@programming.dev 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Opus is an amazing file format.

Oh yeah it was great when I started converting a bunch of stuff to opus. Same quality, less space taken.
