The only reason I haven't cancelled yet is because I moved my family, including my parents, onto a family plan with them, and that's going to be a lot of work to move everyone again.

But this shit fucking sucks. I recommended this product to my loved ones because it's supposed to be trustworthy and secure, and now I find out it's neither of those things.

If you're a Proton customer right now and not in a position to simply cancel your account, submit a support ticket laying out your concerns. I got a detailed and lengthy response back within a day (one that was clearly not a form letter either, it directly addressed all the points I raised). Flooding their support channels will make it clear that they are in some serious shit here.

Write to the Proton Foundation too. Demand that Yen be removed from the board and the company, and that serious changes be made to the leadership at Proton to ensure this never happens again.

I’m moving off of proton due to this and it’s just me. It’s still difficult finding a better solution. Good luck.

I'd recommend either Fastmail, Posteo or Mailfence for email, Cryptpad for Drive, Keepass for Vault, NymVPN for VPN, and literally any FOSS calendar app for calendar.

I moved to mailbox.org for mail and vaultwarden and Obscura for pass and vpn.

The advice I use for myself is always assume a service will either turn shitty enough that you need to leave, or just shut down due to some reason, so I try and only use services that make it easy to move away from.

So instead of Proton or Tuta, use a normal email provider that provides IMAP and supports a custom domain name. There are good ones around for privacy and features like Mailbox.org or similar.

A domain is ~$12/year and ensures you (hopefully) never need to change a bunch of emails on accounts again even if moving to a different email provider.

Guilty.

And I made sure they knew precisely why.

I suspected my distrust of Proton would eventually prove right. Too bad.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 8 points 6 hours ago

God dammit... this totally validates my procrastination in signing up.

Checking privacytools.io, I see they have choices that aren't great alternatives to Proton's ecosystem. For example, NordVPN (not a great product) and Mullvad (didn't the owner contribute to a Swedish nazi party?)

So...is there a curated set of recommendations to replace all Proton products?

If anyone nowadays builds something they can't just bask in the success, the feel the need to spew ideologies all of a sudden.

Not everyone can be VLC

Im pretty buggered here, there's no other VPN that does two things I need, per app routing and port forwarding. There's lots that do the former and a few that do the latter, Proton is the only one that does both.

Correct me if my information is out of date, please.

Private internet access.

Their image is weird because they have the less SEO friendly name ever and all their promotion is made with AI nowadays. It wasn't a few years back and they've been around for a while. But they do both per app routing and port forwarding.

Also, encryption, volatile storage, privacy conscious, a good server spread, etc.

PIA is developed and operated by Israeli devs fwiw [0]. They were acquired in 2019 and a lot of people cancelled/moved on then because Kape has a horrible reputation.

Yet another case of “you either die the hero, or you live long enough to become the villain”

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 7 points 7 hours ago

Except the lifespan for the former seems to be about 6 months :)

Aparently it should have been, either you die a hero or live long enough for people to find out you were always the villian :)
