This is a fairly common scam that just happened to be done by an uber driver. This is why corps should never rely on email or sms for 2fa, it leads to uninformed people being conditioned to think a thing like this scam is normal. This same scam could be done by a package delivery driver, or just about any kind of "gig" worker who thinks they can get away with it.
According to Mackay, after she had ordered her Uber, she got a phone call. She initially ignored it, but figured it was her driver, so she picked up the call.
“I just want to let you know I’m almost there,” is what the voice on the other end told Mackay.
Maybe it’s just some verification thing,” Mackay recounted in her video.
She relented and provided her number, but then the driver asked for “the code.”
She received a code via text, and she figured he was requesting the code that you provide the Uber driver when you get in the vehicle. The driver said that wasn’t the code and that it had expired. He was asking for a code that went to her email inbox.
