Also unsure about that, but it is true that Google help fund its development (unless they stopped?), and I would also believe it its just to help themselves.

What would actually make it succeed though? I have been using it for a long time, not like there are any issues.
Just seems more of a culture for people just use Chrome. Is marketing the solution or what?
I have seen some bad reactions to Matrix from people, like them harassing others or focusing mainly on their paid customers.
Matrix is what I believe most in currently, but Fluxer might also be a good alternative in the future.
Also switched to Kanidm, and using the Kubernetes operator someone made have made it easy to configure also.
I have custom resources that create HTTPRoutes and then protect public traffic with Kanidm by creating a a OAuthClient per site.
