Nearly two years after complaining to Hockey Canada about bullying and sexual misconduct on a Hamilton youth hockey team, a family is relieved they don’t have to keep it secret anymore.

“The big win is we can now talk about it,” said the mother of one of the victims. “The public needs to know when maltreatment is taking place and what the sanctions are.”

It found the team had a "toxic" culture and that coaches breached dressing room policy by “failing to properly supervise the dressing rooms.”

The six players denied any involvement and the coaches denied any knowledge of the activities.

Canada just lost its measles-free status. So here’s the question..

If an unvaccinated child spreads measles to someone else’s kid, why shouldn’t the parents be liable in small-claims court?

I’m not talking about criminal charges, just basic responsibility. If your choice creates the risk you should have to prove you weren’t the reason someone else’s child got sick.

Is that unreasonable?

Since last year, an investigation into the ability of new grocers to set up in the Halifax Regional Municipality has been quietly ticking along under Competition Bureau Canada.

The competition bureau is looking into the use of documents by Sobeys and Loblaw called property controls. These are legal instruments that can block competitors from setting up stores on certain properties.

While the agency is mainly focused on the Halifax area, it’s also looking into the use of property controls throughout Canada.

As Canada looks to recalibrate relations with China amid the ongoing trade war with the U.S., former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig is warning against making China “the core” of its economic diversification strategy.

“Making China the core of that strategy (is) not a good idea, because it’s not geopolitically a reliable partner,” Kovrig said in an exclusive interview with CTV’s Question Period airing Sunday. “As it’s demonstrated time and again, if you create dependency on China, it will weaponize it for political purposes and to silence Canada and constrain our foreign policy.”

Kovrig’s comments come one week after Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea. It was the first meeting between the countries’ two top leaders in eight years.

...

Allegations of foreign interference against China have also persisted, with the final report of the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference calling China “the most active perpetrator of foreign interference targeting Canada’s democratic institutions,” earlier this year.

While Carney described his meeting with Xi as a “turning point” in the relationship, he also acknowledged differences between the two countries when speaking to reporters afterwards.

...

Kovrig has previously said dropping tariffs on Chinese EVs would be a mistake and would give China too much leverage in future negotiations.

Just based on the cultural impact and references to both, I expected Vancouver, home of the canadian movie industry AND where a shitload of yank stuff gets shot to be a far more populous city than Winnipeg, whose landmark cultural touchstones are a joke about going back there in the simpsons, and "Winnipeg is a frozen shithole" by venetian snares.

EDIT : Oh, metropolitan vancouver still has more people than metropolitan winnipeg. Ignore this post I guess?

"Hundreds of thousands of households are without power Tuesday morning across Quebec after a first night of relentless snowfall brought as much as 35 centimeters of snow to parts of the province. Some school boards are asking that students stay at home."

Again I ask, why are our transmission lines not underground? Is it because it is too difficult to dig into the Canadian Shield or something? I live in Sudbury, so I am not one of the effected, but it seems bad that deep into the 21st century we can still have power outages like this that impact so many of our citizens.

Some municipalities in Manitoba are renewing calls for the province to make legislative changes to reduce the role police play in responding to crises as rural and northern communities deal with staffing challenges with law enforcement and an increase in mental health calls.

This comes more than a year after the NDP government committed to an extensive review of the Mental Health Act after families and advocates pressed for system changes. Winnipeg police have also voiced support for an approach that would see mental health groups take the lead on non-violent calls.

Right now, the legislation dictates that peace officers are the only people able to detain someone experiencing a mental health crisis and often the only ones able to transport individuals to a facility.

"The current model is unsustainable and is a grossly ineffective use of resources," said Lisa Gaudet, deputy city manager in Dauphin, Man.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand will open Canada’s new consulate in Greenland's capital this week, as both allies seek to deepen ties amid turbulent relations with the U.S.

The pledge to open the diplomatic office — along with another consulate in Anchorage, Alaska — was initially laid out in the federal government’s Arctic foreign policy, unveiled late last year. Greenland’s government encouraged the move in its own policy document in early 2024, and hopes to reciprocate with an office in Ottawa.

Over 250 Quebec doctors are applying to be able to work in Ontario, according to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The surge of applications is happening in the wake of a controversial bill reforming doctors’ pay, which was passed on Oct. 25 in Quebec.

In just over two weeks, the CPSO saw over 13 times more applicants than the 19 total received from June 1 to Oct. 22 this year, according to data provided in a statement to CBC Toronto.

Quebec’s Bill 2, which is set to take effect in the new year, links doctors' compensation to performance targets relating to the number of patients they care for. It also imposes fines of up to $500,000 per day on doctors who take "concerted action" to challenge the government's policies.

An Ontario judge has dismissed billionaire businessman Frank Stronach's bid to quash his committal to stand trial on one of the dozen charges he faces in his Toronto sexual assault case.

Stronach, 93, was committed to stand trial on 12 charges following a preliminary hearing in April. The charges stem from alleged incidents dating back decades.

His lawyers challenged the decision regarding one charge, but the motion was rejected Monday after submissions by the defence and the Crown.

More pre-trial motions are scheduled to be heard this month, with the judge-alone trial expected to begin in February.
