what does NEET mean?

lmao, NEET is also like a really popular entrance examination in india that parents coaches and sent their kids to write so eventually they will become doctors.
It means they are a burden on everyone around them on purpose.
It's not necessarily on purpose or being a burden on anyone. Last year I spent quite a while as a NEET living off my savings while job hunting. Yes it's generally tied to those who are voluntarily unemployed without savings or responsibilities, but that's just among those taking pride or joking about it. It's just an economic category, and it's one that I and many others fear we may be forced into in the near future.

you were just normal unemployed. lots of people are unemployed for long periods of time while actively looking for a new job, or take on temp/part time work in lieu of full time salaried employment.
NEET is people who actively do not pursue employment, aren't in school, and who refuse to work at all. Most often they are just young people who are totally dependent on their families/parents. Sometimes they are just rich people who don't have to work and fuck around. Often they are socially isolated and don't have active social involvement with anyone.
My personal experience with NEETs is they often had well-off family who just let them fuck around for years because their parents had co-dependent personalities, or paranoid/controlling personalities, and hence they'd rather have their kid be NEET than independent of them.
There's some others in this thread that really need to read your comment, but they are to busy making excuses for strangers.
A lot of them are depressed, autistic or have a visible disability. It's really hard for them to find a job, especially in this economy. Many of them don't receive the support they need because they're adults. I don't think NEETs like being NEETs. So your statement is pretty ableist considering the reality of people. It reeks of "most homeless people can't be helped because they choose to be that way".
And a lot of them are simply taking advantage of their families and friends. If you identify yourself with a cutesy acronym that specifically describes how little effort you are putting into your life I refuse to take you seriously.
This acronym was not selfchosen, it's mainly used in work statistics by the state, and the reasons to fall into that group are very diverse. Mental Illness, physical illness, having to care for family members, bad economy, no available jobs that would pay the bills in rural areas and so on. The amount of people living this way out of their own choice is pretty limited. It's the same faulty way to think about this like it is done about homeless people and illegal immigrants, and it only makes it harder for them to change their situation.
What the fuck are you even on about. When you think of NEETs do you only think of exaggerated greentexts, are you this split off from reality?
No, actually, I have an offspring who claims this label. They are smug about it in fact. They are not autistic, or disabled. They are goddamn lazy and content to let others take care of their every need. This is my experience with NEET. I wish them exactly what their choices in life return them. My disappointment was extremely heavy for a few years. That child had every opportunity, all the support and encouragement one could ask for. They are 25 years old now. This was their choice. I hate it for their SO who has been manipulated into accepting it and is now burdened by it. So, fuck you.
Using a single fuck up (your child) as your sole basis on what a NEET is is hilariously foolish. Many NEETs are struggling with emotional, mental, or societal issues. Your kid? If they're being smug, they aren't suffering at all. That's not a NEET (technically they are, but setting that aside), that's a fuck up you failed to correct.

If what you say is true though, they definitely have some kind of mental illness. You seem to despise them but ultimately they did not choose to exist, you brought them into the world.
Not op, but the world isn't black and white. I definitely know people like they are describing. Perfectly healthy, mentally and physically, yet neet and unapologetic.
One guy actually recently got a job and a wife and an apartments, so good on him. Though he still struggles because his wife is neet, though she claims a dubious disability.
I also know some people as you describe, with different actual disabilities, and neet. It's sad, but that's life.
There's a lot of people in the world, and they exist all over the spectrum.
I just want to add: claiming a dubious disability sounds like a mental health issue, or she really has that disability. In both cases, something is wrong with her. I'm on disability, and have real issues keeping my life in order, but if you just saw me on the street, you wouldn't actually recognize something is wrong.

Idk why you're incredibly bitter, I get your kiddo manipulated other people into taking care of them, but that doesn't mean everyone else is your child and there's no exceptions.
Can we at least be on the same page and acknowledge not everyone who uses a label is the same exact person in the same exact situation?

Dude, Canada has always been a problem. Canada is a voluntary vassal state of the United States. It's almost as bad as the United States.
So you have one supposed counterexample and now as a general rule NEETs, or anyone who claims this label as you say, are parasitic freeloaders who have had every opportunity in their lives?
To deepen this whole deal, it's a personal example where we don't know the other half of the story. A bitter one at that.
I genuinely wish you and your offspring as you call them, which is a very cold and distancing way to refer to your children, all the best. I just know from experience that it's usually in the parents' hands to make sure their children grow into responsible adults and I also know that parents by default have an extreme advantage over their children in terms of power.
Air these grievances out somewhere else please and I kindly return that fuck you back to the sender.

You can be an educated and trained NEET. But if you're not currently in school, employed, or taking training, you're a NEET.
Though it generally only applies to people who fit the description for a longer period of time. You're not a NEET if you're just between jobs.
It also implies that you're not seeking out any of those things but I don't think that's a "requirement"
