I think it's pretty clear Tate is very gay but he is in such conflict with his sexual orientation that he forces himself to have sex with women. Which on turn creates self loathing which compels him to be a complete misogynist, hating and raping women because he blames them for the conflict.

His whole hyper machoism, the need to constantly frame and drape himself with beautiful women, wealth and adoration only shows how deeply insecure and broken he is (even without the conflict with his sexual orientation).
