When I was a teen, the local movie theater became known as the location for the most car thefts in the city. Next to the mall there was an on ramp that led to three different highways, so by the time they came out from the movie, their car could be two hours away in ANY direction.
I always drove jalopies, so my car was always safe.
My first car had electrical problems. I had to go through the trunk if I locked it. It wouldn't start and I gave up trying to figure out where the problem was so I always pushed started it. I always left a note on the window saying the door was open, please dont break the windows. I can't start it with the key. There's nothing in here to steal.
About once a week I'd see my door open, but nothing destroyed. It also helped it was a manual transmission. I bought it for $1800 and sold it for $1200 after adding 50k miles. 1995 civic
