Disposable extinguishers have to be replaced every 10 years or so. Used or not.

Rechargeable ones need internal service every 5 or 6 years depending on model, but with proper maintenance they can last indefinitely, but doing that costs money.

yeah they have best-before dates on them. i think they should be switched every few years or so

You don't need to replace them. You just need to get them retested. They should be retested every year. Most welding supply sotores or gas suppliers offer that service ond it's dirt cheap.

Having a fire blanket is also very helpful and they basically don't expire.

They're basically a bunch of fire extinguishing stuff under pressure, over time the pressure gets bad
