Then why weren't you cheering for USAMNT?

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 0 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Same reason a lot of people weren't cheering for Gotthard Handrickin 1936. IMO anybody participating to represent this regime is an irredeemable shill.

Did you consider that they might be representing the nation and not the regime?

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

No, I don't. I realise this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a lot of people who worked hard for a long time, but it's still a shit opportunity supporting horrible people.

I also don't approve of China, Iran, Russia, etc.

Athletes with moral integrity need to publicly declare that they won't play for authoritarians.

That's like telling a kid they can't do what they love doing because their parents are bad people. You do you I guess. It's not like those athletes have any other option other than not doing what they love.

lmfao, what a take

"Um, actually, athletes are mentally children and therefor morally unaccountable for the people they enrich."

No, that's not how anything works.

Almost every athlete started sporting when they were a kid, and it's the passion and competitiveness they developed back then that is pushing them to reach top sport levels.

Yes, you are telling the kid inside them which started their whole journey to the top to not do what they want to do.

Regardless, it was a metaphorical comparison, I wasn't calling them mental children.
