"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

But digitizing your own content isn’t illegal you have the right to backups. It’s when you choose to distribute those copies to people who did not pay for the original product that you get in trouble. This argument makes no sense.

Buying physical media is actually only buying a limited license to use that media yourself, and ripping the content to digitize/backup is technically against the the terms of that license in many cases. It's ridiculous and unenforceable, but true.

Definitely not the case in Europe

It depends on what "your own content" means. Ripping a home movie has no encryption to begin with so you don't break any laws. Ripping a Hollywood movie requires breaking the dvd encryption and that itself is a violation of law.
