Maybe I'm biased because I've actually sung Coldplay at karaoke, but I definitely throw on a british accent when I do them. It would sound very strange not to

I mean, I have a friend who’s an American citizen but grew up in England, and still has one of the strongest cockney accents you’ve ever heard.

I would have expected "cossles." I guess Chris Martin's accent is more American-sounding.
