"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

A guy up the street from me found a 2.3 gram gold nugget in one!

I found a Ferrarri Testarossa and a brick of cocaine in one last night. Compression algorithms have gotten amazing these days.

This is what's achieved after one person bought WinRAR. Imagine the compression that can be achieved if we all bought a license!

Eh, I hate that meme. Winrar was ass for ages. They had a very big and known security flaw they didn't bother doing anything about for a decade or more. 7zip is actually free, was secure all along, and it's capable of handling better compression.

7z had its fair share of vulns. But they fixed them fast. My only gripe, is that there's no option for auto-update.

No software is flawless, it just annoys me how much internet pirate kiddies dry hump winrar like it's some sacred and holy treasure. At least you use better software and were just using it for the meme recognition value.

You done good. You can have a cookie. Not the tracking kind.

I liked winrar, because it was the best. Then I found gzip, and it was the best. I've always disliked zip and xip formats. Once I discovered 7z, I never went back to anything else. Now I like winrar for the nostalgia, but there is no way it's going on my computer (and not only because I don't run windows).

That was a roller coaster of emotion. I started off like "You son of a bitch!" but then halfway through I went "Whew. I'm so relieved. I didn't give a cookie to a monster."

I heard sometimes they're called forbidden Kinder eggs

Except Kinder eggs are also forbidden so it's kind of a catch 22

They're illegal in the US since it's a toy wrapped in chocolate. You can get Kinder Joys instead, which are half the fun and half the choking hazard

That's why I couldn't find any when I visited. I saw the kinder joys, but I'm not a fan. Did someone actually choke on the kinder surprise?

Probably not, but you know how public safety focussed USAians are. On the plus side you get a free handgun with purchase.
