Edit: yes, I know about the original Luddites, you'd be at least the fourth person to point it out. I get it, thanks ๐Ÿ˜„

It all depends. One one hand, "Luddite" can have almost lazy vibes, people who "blanket distrust" anything newer than fire because they can't be fucked learning how the 'puter/rotary telephone/wheel works. Then there's "this whole thing is a stupid grift which sucks at everything and can fuck right off, and here are several dozen good reasons why"

The term Luddite got co-opted, propagandized. They're the guys who dropped wrenches in the machinery to protest exploitation at the hands of factory owners. They're exactly the example we need now. Modern Luddites are knocking down Flock cameras right now, and there is a lot further to go.

The OG Luddites are victims of bad press and propaganda against them. As a whole, they were less against progress in general and more against how only factory and business owners benefited from that progress, while workers got very little benefit, often instead losing their livelihoods.

often instead losing their livelihoods.

Even more severe, the owner class got the government to classify property damage as punishable by death. They were actively having the government kill Luddites who had not (at the time) even so much as injured a person.

Definitely the latter. The original Luddites weren't against automation per se either.
