I'm leaning towards ending universal suffrage (right to vote) and instead implementing some form of 'transparent' epistoracy. World gets more complicated but people are getting dumber at an alarming rate. Idiocracy will likely manifest far earlier than 2500.

Aw, cute, you don't think we're already there.

Sadly, epistocracy doesn't work. The educated would become the elite class, they'd prevent education of anyone else and whoops, we did this already.

Pretty much any limited voter group will be incentivized to make decisions in its own interests, even if it hurts everyone else.

People calling for such forms of voting assume total benevolence and, on top of that, perfect knowledge of the struggles of others, better than those struggling know themselves.

Total democracy allows everyone to remain self-inrerested and doesn't require guessing the needs of others.

guessing the needs of others.

Food, shelter, community, drugs and the weapons to defend it all.

Also access to healthcare (including mental health and crisis lines), education, emergency services, social care, transportation, communications (both physical and virtual), general infrastructure, and that's just the absolute basics. You'd need so much more than this to build a prosperous society.

Not to mention free access to drugs requires doubling down on healthcare, peace and order, community service. Also, drugs and guns are a very questionable combo.

In other words, if we would actually have a limited circle of politically educated voters, you'd likely be out.

Yay, did my job of putting out an unpopular opinion. I'm not unemployed enough to engage. Each to their own.

Instead of universal suffrage, we should have lottery. 1 random person gets selected instead of elected

Might actually come out ahead of whatever is going on these days.

Dude on the shitter gets a notification that he's the president now, and gets handed nuke codes.

Black Mirror episode.

Athens had that it worked pretty well. It increases representation and prevents a career politician

[–] Tryenjer@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

Just make it random.

Parliament should be a representative sample of the population. The best, bias-free way to achieve this is through random selection. If that sample turns out to be mediocre and unable to make any meaningful decisions, it is because the population itself needs to improve. Time to invest in education.

[–] icelimit@lemmy.ml 1 points 12 hours ago

The problem with a statistically representative sample of the population is that you end up baking in the stupidity inherent in the average population. It is a good statistical representation, but that's not our objective.

We're here to yap about clearly unpopular opinions. You can shit on mine, but share yours so we can shit on you as well.
