Except they've owned it since new, it's got 300k and is still running the original timing belt

Actually, all Toyota uz V8 engines use a timing belt!
Maybe I was thinking of the previous generation that ran the belt, other than the belt that is a bulletproof engine too, I've seen one approaching half a million miles with 100k belt changes.
Ur right every uz V8 has a belt ! The 1uz could snap a belt and live, but 2uz or newer were interference engines so a snapped belt cost u the engine.
