  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.

You know, I think the admin trying to make thought crime a thing actually deserves attention.

[–] missingno@fedia.io 35 points 2 months ago (2 children)

TBH, it's starting to feel like bringing up Epstein in response to every single headline is itself becoming a distraction.

[–] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's become the literal definition of a meme at this point.

[–] Trevita17@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

True blue memetics at work.

Honest, genuine question: would there be any point in this descent into fascism where you'd give up on this tactic?

I suppose I can still understand it at this stage: most conflict is still abroad, only 9 months in to the presidency, and the Epstein revelations are still fresh, but how long will you push this?

Will you still be shouting about Epstein once the first protestor is killed by ICE? What about after the first civilian doors are busted down? What about after trans people are definitively criminalized? What about after the first train is loaded up? What about after the first mass grave is discovered? What about after a few tens of thousands of Americans have been exterminated?

I'm not saying everything above is going to happen, but supposing they did, would you still be shouting Epstein? Because at this point, it appears as if you, along with the rest of the Epstein crowd, will be shouting about it regardless of however far we are into the fascist descent. I dont understand that.

What about after the first civilian doors are busted down?

Already happened in Chicago. They kicked in the doors of an entire apartment building.

Playing Devil's advocate here:

Releasing the Epstein files is something that people on both the left and right can mostly agree on. Even a subset of MAGA want it.

On the other hand, killing protesters is disappointingly more of a partisan concern. Traditional Republicans probably wouldn't approve, but MAGA has been brainwashed into supporting "retaliatory" violence against anyone left of them.

Pushing the Epstein files will, therefore, be more effective when trying to get people together.

Mate, you're getting distracted from the erosion of democracy by only thinking about some fucking papers that we all know implicate him already.

[–] Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Mate, the release of the unredacted Epstein files is pretty much the only thing left with a nonzero chance of turning MAGA against Trump. They don't care about the erosion of democracy, the illegal arrest and deportation of innocents, the economy, the USA becoming an international laughing stock, inflation, the cuts to government services, the wars, they don't even care that he was convicted of raping adults! Uncontrovertible evidence that he likes to put his deformed micropenis inside children is the only thing that might still reach them.

[–] Leg@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm not putting my faith in a hail mary, personally. Something like this won't make true difference, considering the things cultists have tolerated from leaders in the past.

[–] Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Putting your faith in something and doing it because it's all you can do at this point are two different things. I don't currently live in the USA. I can't go to protests. I'm not likely to be allowed to vote in the next election, if there is one. All I can do is pressure, weakly and indirectly, and this is one way of doing it.

I'd rather engage in gestures that may turn out to be a total waste than not doing anything, because that is guaranteed to be a total waste.

[–] Leg@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

I don't think you're wrong. Weak resistance is better than no resistance. I think the Epstein files should be released, and Trump's crimes be made undeniable. However, I have no doubt that we'll need much more than that to get results. Certain people being above the law is foundational to America's deepest flaws, and that won't change under the current regime (barring extreme circumstances). Those files are becoming a distraction when they should really be a little bit of ammo supplementing several large blows aimed at toppling the whole regime, not just the current puppet.

why do you guys always bring up this image when the US is doing shit like this or blatantly attacking minorities, but never when it’s about trump’s fucking ballroom or whatever

[–] WraithGear@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

they literally did, in like every single post about the dam ball room. every. single. one.

[–] AngryRobot@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Be rhe change you want to see in the world.

[–] Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Personally, it's because I haven't seen anybody post about the ballroom.
