the mass produced, factory butchered and packaged shit that might even be sent overseas for processing and come back.. yea, that shit can be pretty bad.. especially the 'tubes' of unknown origins.
the stuff raised out on the farm (sis' parents used to raise their own, 2 head at a time), or the neighbor's farm (where we all get it from now)? not the same product. not.even.close.
How much of that goes to Costco, though?
Small farms sell to livestock auctions.
Those tend to have buyers from large meat processing plants.
That meat is then sold as premium grade, usually steak and roast cuts.
The rest is then used for ground meat, or pet feed.
Unless it's chicken. Then everyone is in the same leaky boat. Seriously, chicken is nasty. Every single country in the world has switched to fast growing chicks, that need to be slaughtered long before adulthood because they get too big to survive on their own.
Then they're too young to really develop flavor, so the processed meat has to be plumped further with injections of salted chicken broth.
Well that's depressing.
The farm is only part of it. Whether they were raised on a factory farm or your neighbor's farm, they all go to the same slaughterhouse. Unless you know farmers who do their own slaughtering, which I highly doubt.
That isn't necessarily better, you have higher rates of accidental additions if you don't operate the saws perfectly at diy small scale.
