Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

hasan piker (guy on the right) does not represent the left and is not worthy of your attention.

he is actively making abdul el-sayed’s chances at election worse and i am frustrated about it given the stakes so i made this meme.

because like. my absolute BESTIE abdul el-sayed is out here working miracles at home trying to keep poc, migrant, low-income, queer, etc. people alive and doing the actual work of building a coalition, including making real inroads with his Jewish constituency, while being explicitly pro-Palestinian and rejecting AIPAC money.

hasan piker has made a handful of appearances with both abdul and zohran, but now abdul is getting viciously smeared for hasan’s own words, with fox news literally turning things hasan said into attack-ad material against him. and hasan just will not read the room and step back.

this is the same BOZO hasan piker who wears mao outfits, plays literal terrorist propaganda videos for his friends and goes “they’re just very musical people,” denies the Uyghur genocide, supports the invasion of Tibet, lies about queer rights in China while going on tours, and has said enough insane shit that even my OTHER bestie zohran mamdani disavowed him months ago. and the room is STILL unread and some people are trying to tell me i have to fall on the sword for piker.

do i have to beg ;;;;;;

i just want candidates who aren’t evil to win :’(

That's why I included the timestamp in the link?

He said "I don't believe in socialism, I believe in science."

Edit: Sorry, I guess it got borked for some reason. Timestamp is 2:00.

In no world is that a right wing libertarian dogwhistle let’s be so for real.

El-Sayed isn’t DSA and, while he has the approval of many DSA members, he is also free to moderate his speech to be effective in the unfortunately highly propagandized context of the American Midwest.

The right, conservatism, and especially fascism are all explicitly the ones associated with the denial of science so I am asking us not to kid ourselves here.

[–] dreamy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

No, it very obviously is. Him being a Dubai landlord puts more weight behind it as well.

The U.S. currently has huge inertia in terms of leftism, but you continue wasting that on "I believe in science" and "Israeli Jews have a right to self-determination" candidates.

If only y'all had the courage to form a completely new, radical communist party from the ground up...

oh wow actually i didn’t know that one. do you have a source that isn’t the daily wire? but yeah that’s significant, he still has my endorsement for now but with that as an asterisk

also i am like totally down with supporting emerging parties/activist groups. do you have someone/something to point me towards? i’m just working with the assets we have for now.

got it, so he’s not a landlord per se but there’s definitely some real estate entanglement with that could certainly be a conflict of interest liability. and it’s residential property too looks like. hasan piker’s mother i believe is also a residential property landlord and that disgusts me so i certainly apply the same principle here.

thanks for sharing! again this is genuinely new to me so i appreciate it.

[–] dreamy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

He literally is. He has property in Dubai that he rents out. That's what landlord means. Doesn't matter if it's residential or not, I would even argue that that's worse.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (1 children)

no im definitely agreeing with you, residential is worse.

maybe you’re right about him being a landlord even though it’s his wife’s holdings, i’m not a real estate professional.

but the technicality doesn’t matter, i agree. the rent-seeking on residential land is the real issue. it’s real bad when donald trump does it, it’s real bad when piker’s mom does it, and it’s real bad when el-sayed does it. i hope he recognizes the error in his ways because that’s really gross.

[–] dreamy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

He won't. That's why he openly calls himself a capitalist.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

sounds good. we’ll see what we can fight for next primary then.

[–] dreamy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I don't. I live in Turkey. We have actual anarcho-socialistic and Marxist-Leninist parties in parliament here, even though they're heavily disliked by the general population for being "terrorists" and face constant persecution from the government. That's electoralism for you, but I can't really say much against them because they did try to revolt.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

got it. i know for a fact i don’t fuck with marxist-leninism.

[–] dreamy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Have fun with capitalism 🤷‍♀️

the nice thing is that there aren’t just two socio-political-economic schools of thought in the universe lol

[–] dreamy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

With ML being pretty much the most successful leftist ideology that has ever worked in actual practice.
