Bring your bear spray. There have been sightings.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 80 points 4 days ago (3 children)

As long as the DOJ is controlled by Trump they won't charge him over anything no matter how blatantly he is rigging the election in his favor and how obvious it is that he should have lost.

Remember when Bill Clinton met Loretta Lynch on a tarmac and the Republicans completely lost their shit?

A former president being seen speaking with the current Attorney General, and it was a massive fucking deal. Because they made it a massive deal, and Democrats allowed them to make it into a massive deal.

Don't ever let Republicans claim to care about this kind of shit.

Don't ever let Republicans claim to care about this kind of shit.

It's cute that you think you can stop Republicans from lying, or that they give a shit about hypocrisy.

They don't. That's why they're winning.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I'm saying that people need to stop giving them the benefit of the doubt. Especially Democrats who allow them to pull this shit over and over again.

Edit: the media as well. Constantly sane-washing

[–] mattyroses@lemmy.today 3 points 4 days ago

By Democrats, you mean the elected officials in that party?

They don't give them the benefit of the doubt - they just don't care about stopping them.

[–] turtlesareneat@piefed.ca 16 points 4 days ago

Yes but the Democrats will maybe come into power eventually and they'll need something to pardon Trump over

[–] chahn.chris@piefed.social 8 points 4 days ago

All things change and any of us left alive when they do will remember.

[–] mattyroses@lemmy.today 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I don't know why after a decade of Trump people think "ummm akshually that's illegal" means anything.

They're breaking the law. Openly. THEY ARE DABBING ON YOU.

The question isn't if they can legally - they cannot. Nor if they can - they are. It's what are you going to do to stop them?

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 9 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

In the Untied States it's illegal to depict a living person on a coin. Trump coins are a monument to the law motvapplying to him

[–] NekoKoneko@lemmy.world 39 points 4 days ago (4 children)

I had to look it up to see what Trump/DHS's unconstitutional argument will be to ignore this. The "..." omitted sections show pretty clearly what they will say:

Whoever, being an officer of the Army or Navy, or other person in the civil, military, or naval service of the United States, orders, brings, keeps, or has under his authority or control any troops or armed men at any place where a general or special election is held, unless such force be necessary to repel armed enemies of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both; and be disqualified from holding any office of honor, profit, or trust under the United States. https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/592

"...is held, unless such force is necessary to repel armed enemies of the United States, shall be fined..."

So their first-year-law-school failing DOJ leads will argue that they need ICE there to stop voter fraud, which force is necessary to "repel armed enemies of the United States" since hypothetically the rampant fraudsters could be armed.

Either Trump will just do it without any lawsuit-ripening warning, or if his demented brain reveals his plans early and a suit is filed in time, the Supreme Court will hear the emergency appeal of the inevitable district and appellate findings that it is unconstitutional, and issue a shadow docket ruling that overturns the (ruling upholding the) Constitution without comment or reasoning.

[–] zbyte64@awful.systems 27 points 4 days ago

Not sure if the supreme court will do anything. Already declined to intervene on the USPS issue, saying damage needs to be done first

[–] hoppeduponcoffee@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

This was the entire point. Nullify the DOJ to create immunity, and disregard the law themselves. Then twist it and weaponize it towards the people opposing them.

This is where we’re at. Remember when we were screaming about project 2025 and everyone was trying to tell us to calm down, saying “They’d never be able to do that?”

Well, they did it.

Fascists don’t seize power all at once. They test, backtrack and go two steps forward. They utilize the boiling frog effect.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

since hypothetically the rampant fraudsters could be armed.

yes, we've already established that ICE/Trump brownshirts will be there.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 5 points 4 days ago (3 children)

They're also not part of the military so I feel like this may not apply? I dunno I'm no legal expert.

[–] DokPsy@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's only illegal if they are held accountable for it

[–] SeeMarkFly@lemmy.ml 4 points 4 days ago

The Supreme Court says the president of the United States of America (Trump is currently that plackholder) is ABOVE the law.

No laws above that.

[–] mmcintyre@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Oh true. What does that mean in this context?

[–] mmcintyre@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Employees of ICE, just like the USDA and NASA, are all federal civic service workers. So my guess, as a non law-type person, is that phrasing in the law was written with all of them in mind.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 days ago

Ok I think you might be right, maybe it does apply then.

[–] SeeMarkFly@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago

I'm a justice expert, THIS isn't just.

[–] BillCheddar@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

for which dickhead will promptly issue pardons.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago

And who, may I ask, enforces the law?
