I don't think they wait till smartphone and smart tablet are stabilised, when they do iphone and ipad, their competitors are still fumbling around with the tech but they somehow make it right. When they do vision pro the same thing is happening, their competitor(google glass, microsoft hololens) is still fumbling around with the tech, but this time they overestimated their own capability and also the demand of this thing.
They released iphone after many competitors had half baked products in the market. Using capacitive touch with gestures like pinch zoom was absolutely brilliant.
For tablets, they waited until Microsoft's attempt at tablet computers failed, and then they gave their own twist. I guess there was a time they actively learned from their competitors' successes and mistakes.
