I thought this attitude that the "classics" were what made you intelligent and worthy went out of fashion some time in the 50s... guess it still has its holdouts

No, it was what made you (classically) educated, not intelligent. And for people who don't really know each other it is easier to start the conversation if they have something in common. That's one of the reasons it used to be expected to have some education in this direction.

Also, the douchebag in the original picture wrote Cellini twice, so he is not even "intelligent" :)

The second one is the lesser known Bob Cellini from Poughkeepsie, who had a poignant bathroom wall writing style.

A guy asked me one time if I thought I was smarter/better educated than the classically educated American founding fathers, and I was like, "You mean the guys who didn't know about dinosaurs or plate tectonics?" Also they thought they'd finish making the government at some point and then just never did, which we've been dealing with for a long time now. So yeah, those guys weren't idiots, but let's not pretend they were special.

Those peole remind me of the line from it's always sunny:

“The government of today has no business telling us how to live our lives because the government of 200 years ago already did.”

It's said by a creep who you'd never leave a kid around giving it's got some extra contextual fit.

Western classicly educated. Which isn't great as it starts from the false premise that 'i think therefore I am' when eastern classics have it the other way round.

I am, therefore I think.

How does "I am therefore I think" work? Rocks are. Water is.

[–] deHaga@feddit.uk 1 points 18 minutes ago* (last edited 18 minutes ago)

The amness comes before the delusion and illusion of thought that i think causes.

Evolutionarily and subjectively.

I can tell you're not "western" classically educated, because if you were, you'd add "I know that I know nothing" ;-)
