I agree modern USA variant is Ding Dong Ditch, however it couldn't have always been that as the game predates doorbells. What was dinging and what was dongin for those early trailblazers?

Bells are quite old. Maybe people sometimes targeted houses that used them instead of door knockers or just knocking and called it Ding Dong Ditch back then too! probably not tho.
